Pews News – 23rd March 2014

23rd March 2014

St. Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality.  You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith.  If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Special Welcome
Special welcome to Lesley Lee, a licensed Reader at St. James Fletchampstead.  Lesley is undertaking a placement at St. Andrews over the next 6 weeks.  Please do introduce yourself to Lesley and make her welcome.

Gift Day
St. Andrew’s is hosting its first ever gift day on Saturday 29th March.  This is an opportunity for church members to support the work of StAPH with a one off gift.  We are seeking to raise £7,000 towards the new post of StAPH leader, as our church plant in Woodlands School embarks on another chapter of its exciting journey.  We want to encourage everyone to support this, whether they are a regular at StAPH, occasional attender or have never worshipped with the congregation there as a sign that we are all ONE church.  People are encouraged to give sacrificially and generously.  At the same time, we welcome all donations, which can be made anonymously, however small, as well as accepting pledges.  The church will be open on the 29th from 10-11.30am and from 2-3.30pm when coffee and cake will be served.  There will be also an opportunity to meet the new StAPH leader, Phil Richardson and his wife Anne, before he takes up post and chat informally with him.  If you are able to provide a cake, please speak to Greg, Fran or Marguerite Todd.

Baptism Visiting Team
We are also looking for volunteers to join our baptism visiting team.  Please speak to Norah Hall for further information.

May Day
St. Andrew’s is hosting an exciting May Day event on the park in Allesley Green at the far end of the parish on Monday 5th May from 1-9 pm.  There will be music (brass band, Parkhill School choir and contemporary rock band); morris dancing, maypole dancing, donkey rides, fairground rides and many stalls.  The organising committee (Julia, Emma, Fran, Richard, Greg and Lindsey) would be pleased to hear from anyone willing to help out on the day, by setting up, running a stall or acting as a steward.  Also, one of the church’s events will be the PLANT STALL for which we would like the donation of plants and helpers to man the stall. If you can help please let Trevor Hill or David Griffiths know – 01675 442240 or email

Mothering Sunday
Next Sunday is Mothering Sunday.  We want to celebrate this as a whole church family, so there will be no Junior Church on this occasion.

Under 30s Bible Study
A small bible study group for adults aged 18-30 is being launched on Wednesday evenings in mid March.  Anyone interested should contact Dan on 024 7642 2856.

Big Birthday Bash – 7th June
A date for your diary!  As part of the Hope 2014 programme in Coventry, there is going to be a ‘Big Birthday Bash’ in Broadgate on Saturday 7th June from 11am – 3pm.  There will be stalls celebrating family life, free barbecues, hot drinks, musical entertainment, circus type acts and much more!  If you would like to bake a cake, or help in any way, please email Angus Ormes at

Easter Flowers
To decorate the church for Easter costs a lot of money for the flowers. If you wish to make a donation towards the cost, please see Ann Dove.

Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday’s 10am service will feature a dramatised enactment of the Passion story.  If anyone (from 8-80) wishes to help with this, please speak to Greg or Rebecca.

Passover Meal
As per last year, as part of our Holy Week celebrations, we are hosting a Passover Meal in church on Monday 14th April.  Everyone (adults and children) is welcome, but for catering purposes it is important to know in advance who is attending.  Please sign up on the list at the back of church.

Electoral Roll
It is that time of year when we update the electoral roll.  Anyone who has been worshiping at St. Andrew’s regularly for the last 6 months or more (including StAPH) should complete a short electoral roll form and return it to Lesley Harrison or one of the sidespersons.

Adrian Plass
Adrian Plass, his wife Bridget and Coventry singer/song writer Rob Halligan will be entertaining at St. Paul’s, Stockingford on 28th March. The evening begins at 7.30pm and tickets are available at £10 each from Lesley on 024 7674 8126 or

Window Fund
We are close to completing work on the subsidence that has so badly affected St. Andrew’s Church building.  That work should be complete by the end of next month.  However, despite the incredible generosity of church members and other parishioners, we are approximately £1800 short of the amount we need to pay contractors and engineers.  We would be immensely grateful to anyone able to make any further donation to this vital project.

Weekly Offering Envelopes
Boxes of Weekly Offering Envelopes for the tax year beginning in April are now at the back of the church. If you are a tax payer, Gift Aiding benefits our church by enabling us to claim tax relief on your donations at the end of each year. Thanks to all those who have completed Gift Aid Forms and Gift Aid Envelopes (from the back of the pews) we were repaid £7306 by the Inland Revenue for the last Tax Year. Anyone not already giving regularly and who would like Offering Envelopes, or regular givers who are tax payers and would like to complete a Gift Aid Form, please contact Richard Marr (Tel: 01676 522697).

The 21st Scout Group (Kenthurst Close) are looking for a helper every Monday evening from 7.30pm to 9pm. If anyone is interested please come down to the Group and speak to either Neil, Jess, Luke or Charley.
