Pews News – 4th May 2014

4th May 2014

St. Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality.  You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith.  If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Crèche & Junior Church
Please note that because of the increased number of babies/toddlers attending St. Andrew’s on Sunday mornings for the 10am service, we have begun to offer a staffed crèche in the side room for the convenience of parents.  Also, children of three and upwards are welcome to join Junior Church which meets at St. Andrew’s School (during term-time only).

Special Welcome
To Phil Richardson (our new StAPH Leader) and his wife Anne who are joining us this morning, for the first time on a Sunday morning.

May Day
St. Andrew’s is hosting an exciting May Day event on the park in Allesley Green at the far end of the parish tomorrow Monday May 5th from 1-8 p.m.  There will be music (brass band, guitar ensemble, crowd singing and contemporary rock band); morris dancing, maypole dancing, donkey rides, fairground rides and many stalls.  The organizing committee (Julia, Emma, Fran, Richard, Greg and Lindsey) would be pleased to hear from anyone willing to help out on the day, by setting up, running a stall or acting as a steward.

Pastoral Care Team
We are looking to recruit new members for a pastoral care team, those willing to visit those who are sick, bereaved or otherwise in need of a visit.  If you would like to know more, please speak to David Griffiths on 01675 442240 or one of the clergy.

Annual Meeting
Thanks to everyone who attended the APCM on Monday night.  Emma Read and Nigel Dawes were elected to serve as churchwardens.  Julia McNaney, Fran Smith and Charley Watts were elected to Deanery Synod; while the following were elected to PCC: Nick Tooby, Diane Wilson, Trevor Hill, Jackie Lynch, Alan Sheepy, Liz Reed, Tricia Jewsbury, Stan Cooper, Terri Beales, Richard Marr and Jeremy Thomas.

Walking to Church
Sunday May 18th marks our annual walk to church Sunday when we encourage all congregations to walk or cycle to church if possible, and if not to share transport as efficiently you can.  This is to remind ourselves of the importance of being good stewards of God’s creation.

Credit Union
St. Andrew’s is partnering with other local churches to open a credit union collection point at St Oswalds Church on Friday mornings.  Anyone able to give up a couple of hours to staff the collection point on a rota basis should speak to Greg.

Sermon Recordings
The last two Sunday sermons (Greg on Easter Day and Lesley last Sunday) were recorded and can be listened to on the website.  In future (with the exception of Worship 4 All) most Sunday morning sermons will be recorded for those unable to attend.

Burglaries in Eastern Green
Eastern Green residents should be warned that there has been a spate of burglaries in the area, some of them during the day when home owners have been in the garden.

St. Andrew’s will be running Alpha on Thursday evenings at the Vicarage for 10 weeks from May 1st.  This course, which has been undertaken by so many, requires no prior knowledge of Christian faith, but is a wonderful introduction to it as well as an opportunity to revisit lessons dimly remembered.  It also is a great to get to meet new people and to be more fully immersed in life at St. Andrew’s.  Please complete a form from the back table and return to Lesley Harrison or a sidesperson.

Gideon Bibles
I am pleased to say that I have been able to send a further £50 from St. Andrew’s.  I am told this will provide 55 testaments and that all money collected goes to provide these, nothing at all goes on administration which is good news.  Can I remind you that there are empty tubes at the back of the church if you would like to help this very worthy cause.  With grateful thanks, Barbara Warner.

Celebration Service
You are warmly invited to our Diocesan Celebration on Saturday 10th May to mark the 20th anniversary of the first Ordinations of women to the priesthood. The Eucharist will be hosted by Bishop Christopher, celebrated by Rev’d Canon Katrina Scott, and will begin at our cathedral at 11am.  Those interested in exploring their own vocations are especially encouraged to attend if possible. The service will be followed by refreshments for all.

Christian Aid
We are looking for someone to take on the responsibility of co-ordinating our Christian Aid collection.  There is an opportunity to shadow David and Frances this year, before taking on full responsibility next year.  Anyone who feels they might be able to do this should speak to David or Frances.

To Dave Pinks and Jill Tapping who were married at St. Andrew’s yesterday.
