11th May 2014
St. Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
Crèche & Junior Church
Please note that because of the increased number of babies/toddlers attending St. Andrew’s on Sunday mornings for the 10am service, we have begun to offer a staffed crèche in the side room for the convenience of parents. Also, children of three and upwards are welcome to join Junior Church which meets at St. Andrew’s School (during term-time only).
May Day in Allesley Green
Many, many thanks to all who supported the May Day event in Allesley Green. Some 1500 visited the Fun Day in the course of the event, which more than paid for itself. Special thanks must go to the organizing committee of Julia, Richard, Emma, Lindsay, Julie and Fran. Look out for photos on the church website.
Pastoral Care Team
We are looking to recruit new members for a pastoral care team, those willing to visit those who are sick, bereaved or otherwise in need of a visit. If you would like to know more, please speak to David Griffiths on 01675 442240 or one of the clergy. Please note there will be a briefing session for all existing and new visitors next Saturday 17th May at 10am in church.
Thanks to everyone who attended the APCM last week. Emma Read and Nigel Dawes were elected to serve as churchwardens. Julia McNaney, Fran Smith and Charley Watts were elected to Deanery Synod; while the following were elected to PCC: Nick Tooby, Diane Wilson, Trevor Hill, Jackie Lynch, Alan Sheepy, Liz Reed, Tricia Jewsbury, Stan Cooper, Terri Beales, Richard Marr and Jeremy Thomas.
Walking to Church
Next Sunday 18th May marks our annual walk to church Sunday when we encourage all congregations to walk or cycle to church if possible, and if not to share transport as efficiently you can. This is to remind ourselves of the importance of being good stewards of God’s creation.
St. Andrew’s is partnering with other local churches to open a credit union collection point at St. Oswald’s Church on Friday mornings from 10-12 noon, beginning on June 27th. Anyone able to give up a couple of hours to staff the collection point on a rota basis should speak to Greg. Full training will be given in the fairly elementary record keeping.
With the exception of Worship 4 All, sermons are now regularly being recorded on Sunday mornings. If you want to hear a sermon again or are away and want to catch up, please visit the website.
There will be an Ascension Day service of Holy Communion at 7pm on Thursday 29th May. This will be followed by a teaching session on fasting in the side room at 7.30pm. For those who consider fasting is not for them, you are urged to come with an open mind, since fasting takes many forms, and doesn’t necessarily entail total abstention from food. But it does concern the important matter of drawing closer to God. You are welcome to attend either or both of these events that evening.
Returns on Sunday 25th May at 2.30pm. We will be walking from Berkswell Church to Meriden, approx 1 ½ miles, where refreshments will be served. Walking Church gives people an opportunity to combine two favourite activities. We will pause along the way to hear bible passages read and will discuss these as we go with our fellow travellers. Walking Church is very suitable for children who can manage to walk that distance. If you would like to come along but need a lift either to Berkswell or back from Meriden, please speak to Greg or Kate.
We need a volunteer for the morning of Wednesday 21st May at St. Oswald’s Church as a one off to cover Foodbank. Please let Jackie Lynch know on 024 7646 7344 if you are able to help.
The next Youth Service with its focus on Body Image will take place next Sunday, May 18th, at 6.30pm. Please do support our young people in their ministry as they try out and learn new things, as well as encourage any young people you know to attend.
Christian Aid Week launches this morning. We are looking for someone to take on the responsibility of co-ordinating our Christian Aid collection. There is an opportunity to shadow David and Frances this year, before taking on full responsibility next year. Anyone who feels they might be able to do this should speak to David or Frances.
To Dave Pinks and Jill Tapping who were married at St. Andrew’s last Saturday.
St. Andrew’s is hosting a service with anointing and prayer for healing on Sunday 11th May at 6.30pm.
Strawberry Cream Tea
Our annual Strawberry Cream Tea takes place on Sunday 8th June from 3-6pm in the Vicarage garden. This is both a celebration of Pentecost as well as an opportunity to bid farewell to David and Frances on what will be their last Sunday in Eastern Green. Tickets are available from Fran (76422856) or Barbara (76403458) at £4 for adults and £2 for children. Fran would also like volunteers to make cakes for the tea. Please speak to her if you are able to help.
Churchyard Flowerbed Tidy-Up
Volunteers are required to help with tidying the flowerbed at the front of church on Saturday 17th May anytime between 9am & noon. No experience required – just enthusiasm. Please bring your own gardening implements. Thanks in anticipation, Trevor.
Betty’s 90th Birthday
I was completely overwhelmed with the wonderful reception I received when I arrived at church on my birthday. The lovely cards, good wishes and the beautiful flowers were the start of a day I shall remember with love and gratitude, thanking my family and dear friends. I am blessed indeed. Thank you all, Betty.
If you are new to the church, please sign the Visitors Book at the back of the church. We would be grateful to receive your comments.
