18th May 2014
St. Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
Crèche & Junior Church
Please note that because of the increased number of babies/toddlers attending St. Andrew’s on Sunday mornings for the 10am service, we have begun to offer a staffed crèche in the side room for the convenience of parents. Also, children of three and upwards are welcome to join Junior Church which meets at St. Andrew’s School (during term-time only).
May Day in Allesley Green
Many, many thanks to all who supported the May Day event in Allesley Green. Some 1500 visited the Fun Day in the course of the event, which more than paid for itself. Special thanks must go to the organising committee of Julia, Richard, Emma, Lindsay, Julie and Fran. Please see the church website for photos.
Walking to Church
Today, May 18th, marks our annual walk to church Sunday when we encourage all congregations to walk or cycle to church if possible, and if not to share transport as efficiently you can. This is to remind ourselves of the importance of being good stewards of God’s creation. We also hope that people will be encouraged to change their habits and to find more friendly ways of travelling on a more regular basis.
We are looking for one or two people to volunteer to deliver the Link magazine on an ad hoc basis to cover for holidays. If you are able to help in this way, please speak to Barbara Warner, 024 7640 3458.
St. Andrew’s is partnering with other local churches to open a credit union collection point at St. Oswald’s Church on Friday mornings from 10-12 noon, beginning on June 27th. Anyone able to give up a couple of hours to staff the collection point on a rota basis should speak to Greg. Full training will be given in the fairly elementary record keeping.
With the exception of Worship 4 All, sermons are now regularly being recorded on Sunday mornings. If you want to hear a sermon again or are away and want to catch up, please visit the website.
There will be an Ascension Day service of Holy Communion at 7pm on Thursday 29th May. This will be followed by a teaching session on fasting in the side room at 7.30pm. For those who consider fasting is not for them, you are urged to come with an open mind, since fasting takes many forms, and doesn’t necessarily entail total abstention from food. But it does concern the important matter of drawing closer to God. You are welcome to attend either or both of these events that evening. We are seeking to encourage people to make the 10 day period between Ascension and Pentecost a time of seeking God. If you are unable to make this session, but want to participate, please visit the church website: http://standrews-eg.org.uk
Returns next Sunday, May 25th, at 2.30pm. We will be walking from Berkswell Church to Meriden, approx 1 ½ miles, where refreshments will be served. Walking Church gives people an opportunity to combine two favourite activities. We will pause along the way to hear bible passages read and will discuss these as we go with our fellow travelers. Walking Church is very suitable for children who can manage to walk that distance. If you would like to come along but need a lift either to Berkswell or back from Meriden, please speak to Greg or Kate.
The next Youth Service with its focus on Body Image takes place tonight at 6.30pm. Please do support our young people in their ministry as they try out and learn new things, as well as encourage any young people you know to attend.
St. Andrew’s is working in partnership with other local churches to set up ‘Messy Church’, a family friendly interactive experience that has a national profile and many churches across the city are running successfully. We are looking for 2 or 3 people to represent St. Andrew’s on the team to run the service on a monthly basis on Sunday afternoons. You wouldn’t have to lead worship or speak publically necessarily. There is room for people to cook or lead craft activities with children as well as musicians etc. If you want to know more, please speak to Greg.
Please note that there are two members of the Healing Team available every Sunday, usually sitting in the choir stalls, to pray with people after the service as required. Do take advantage of this if you have any prayer needs.
Christian Aid Week closes this morning. Please pass on your collection and other donations to David Hawkey as soon as possible.
Strawberry Cream Tea
Our annual Strawberry Cream Tea takes place on Sunday June 8th from 3-6 p.m. in the Vicarage garden. This is both a celebration of Pentecost as well as an opportunity to bid farewell to David and Frances on what will be their last Sunday in Eastern Green. Tickets are available from Fran (76422856) or Barbara (76403458) at £4 for adults and £2 for children. Fran would also like volunteers to make cakes for the tea. Please speak to her if you are able to help.
Available from Dan Smith on 07918 550210. Tuition in varying styles from beginners to advanced. Rate £20 an hour subject to negotiation.
If you are new to the church, please sign the Visitors Book at the back of the church. We would be grateful to receive your comments.
