11th January 2015 – First Sunday of Epiphany
St. Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
Please note that because of the increased number of babies/toddlers attending St. Andrew’s on Sunday mornings for the 10am service, we have begun to offer a staffed crèche in the side room for the convenience of parents.
2015 sees the 140th anniversary of the founding of St. Andrew’s Church in 1875. The celebration begins on Sunday 25th January at 10am with a special service during which Greg will formally be inducted as Vicar by the Archdeacon of Coventry. There will be a shared lunch afterwards at the Eastern Green Social Club. If you would like to come to the lunch, please sign the sheet at the back of Church, or see Alex for details.
Prayer and Praise
‘Seek His Face’, our bi-monthly prayer meeting is being held in Church on Monday 19th January from 7-8pm. An hour of worship, thanksgiving and praying for our Church and the world. If you have never been to one of these meetings, we would like to encourage you to come! Please see Bev or Alex for details.
Service of Christian Unity
Our annual service promoting unity between the local churches will take place on Sunday 18th January at Limbrick Wood Baptist Church at 6.30pm. It would be good if we could get as many people from St. Andrew’s attending this important service – please let Alex know if you would like a lift.
A reminder that Kate’s induction as Vicar of St. Paul’s, Stockingford takes place on Sunday 25th January at 3pm. We have plans to take a minibus. Anyone interested in this should speak to Veronika or sign the list at the back of church.
At long, long last our beautiful window has been magnificently restored. Many thanks to those who gave so generously to the window fund to enable this project (which has taken four years) to be completed. Special thanks to Trevor Hill who has worked tirelessly as clerk of works and overseen every stage of the project.
We are still looking for volunteers to join the rota for operating the sound system and powerpoint. Anyone else willing to help should speak to Steve Martin or Steve Wankling.
We are developing an exciting social programme for 2015 that includes a quiz night, beetle drive, Valentine’s Day dinner and much more. To see further details of this, please visit the website or noticeboard at the back of church.
Shirley and Gareth Lewis will be hosting a 10 week Alpha course at their home, 900 Broad Lane, commencing Thursday 22nd January at 7.30pm. The course provides a great chance to learn more about the Christian faith and meet new people. The evening starts with a beautiful meal, followed by a talk on a Christian topic e.g. why should I pray or how can I be sure of my faith. This is followed by discussion, with every opportunity to ask questions before the evening finishes at 9.30pm. Enrolment forms are at the back of church. Only three places remain. Catering Required for Alpha Course
Volunteers are needed to caterfor one Thursday evening Alpha session which runs from 22nd January to 26th March at 900 Broad Lane. Caterers would be paid £15 in advance and would need to cater for a maximum of 8 people producing one simple course e.g. pizza, baked potatoes etc. If you could spare an evening to cater for the Alpha course please contact Julie on email@example.com or 07756 918847.
Fish and Chip Quiz Night
The event takes place at Eastern Green Village Hall on Saturday 17th January 2015 at 7pm prompt. Tickets cost £8 adults and £4 children under 12. Includes a choice of supper, bread & butter, tea, coffee or a soft drink (salt, vinegar and sauce provided). Excellent prizes for the winning team and also first two runners up. We wish George Cooke every blessing in his retirement as choir director. George is standing down after nearly 10 years of loyal service to the choir and St. Andrew’s. We are so grateful to him. We are now seeking a replacement. There is a degree of flexibility about the role, so if this is something that appeals to you, please talk further to Greg or George about it.
A very big thanks to the Choir and Congregation for the wonderful gifts given to me to mark my retirement as Choir Master. I shall thoroughly enjoy using them. But, long after they have gone something I shall treasure for the rest of my life will be the love and affection shown me. Thank you all so much. God bless. George Cooke.
Andrew Rodgers, who has been attending St. Andrew’s in recent months has kindly written down the story of his life to share with others. Copies of his testimony are available at the back of church to take away.
The Christmas raffle was drawn after a wonderful Carol Service and raised a whopping £467.10 for church funds. Many thanks to Nigel Dawes who organised it and thanks to all of his contacts who donated the 29 prizes. Thanks also to Alison Watts for donating the lovely hamper.
Divorce Recovery Course : Restored Lives 29th January – 5th March 2015
This course supports and empowers people to move forward from relationship breakdown and to live a full life free from past issues. It is open to everyone, whatever your religion or belief. Each evening begins at 7pm with an informal meal followed by short talks and opportunities for discussion in small groups. These are led by people who have gone through divorce themselves. The setting is welcoming, relaxed and unthreatening. Although it may feel like it, you are not alone. Come along and meet people in a similar situation and listen to expert advice. Jardine Crescent Post Office
On 15th January, the post office in Jardine Crescent is moving into the square and will subsequently open 7 days a week.
Once again we have been able to contribute £52.00 for which the Gideons were very grateful. They wished to thank all those who fill the tubes and make such a great difference. Catering Required for Marriage Preparation Course
St. Andrew’s is hosting a marriage preparation course on Wednesday 28th January, 4th February & 11th February for all couples getting married at St. Andrew’s this year. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. Our first meeting of the new year is held in the side room of the church on Tuesday 20th January at 1.30-3pm. The cost is 50p per person. Meetings are organised by a member and consist of an opening prayer, a short informal talk, poetry reading or quiz etc, followed by tea or coffee and biscuits and a general chat.
