1st February 2015 – Fourth Sunday of Epiphany
St. Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
Please note that because of the increased number of babies/toddlers attending St. Andrew’s on Sunday mornings for the 10am service, we have begun to offer a staffed crèche in the side room for the convenience of parents.
We extend a special welcome to children of St. Andrew’s and Eastern Green Schools this morning as we celebrate Education Sunday together.
Grateful thanks from Greg and Fran for the love and support we received (and tickets to the Open Golf Championship!) on Greg’s installation as Vicar last Sunday. Thanks also to Alex for planning and leading the 140th Anniversary Service and leading the church during Greg’s period of study leave.
Our monthly Ignatian Service takes place tonight at 6.30pm.
A divorce recovery course has just started at the Vicarage on Thursday evenings. It is not too late for anyone in need of support during the difficult time of relationship breakdown to come along. Please speak to Trish or Greg about this if you know anyone who might benefit from joining us.
We are exploring the possibility of developing a team to take home communion to the housebound. Anyone who would like to train for this vital ministry should speak to Greg. Also, if you know of anyone who might like to receive home communion, let Greg know.
We start a sermon series next week on Home Groups:
Feb 8th Sue Masters Home Groups and discipleship
Feb 22nd Greg Smith Home Groups and pastoral care
March 1st Greg/Sue Home Groups and mission
Please speak to Sue if you want to know more.
We are still looking for volunteers to join the rota for operating the sound system and powerpoint. Anyone else willing to help should speak to Steve Martin or Steve Wankling.
Valentine’s Dinner Dance
A fabulous Valentine’s night is being hosted by St. Andrew’s at Burton Green Village Hall on 14th February. Tickets are £20, but this includes a four course buffet and high quality live entertainment with all the trimmings you might expect and more. Tickets are available from Fran, Jackie Lynch or Rosemarie Over.
Lynda Edwards will be replacing Kate Massey as curate in charge of St. Laurence’s Meriden on 23rd February. Lynda’s involvement with St. Andrew’s will be much more limited than Kate’s, only acting as a mentor to the Pram Service. She also has responsibility for Coventry’s Deaf congregation which meets at Christ Church, Cheylesmore.
Andrew has kindly written down his life story (testimony) to share with others. Copies of this are available at the back of church for anyone who would like to read this moving account.
Please put our Beetle Drive on your calendars. This will take place at Park Hill School on Friday 6th March. Tickets will be available soon.
It feels like Christmas has just ended and already we are planning for Easter at St. Andrew’s! This year we will be running a Lent course on Tuesday afternoons over the five weeks of Lent. This will be an opportunity to come together to reflect on the Passion of Christ using the Bible, reflections and group discussions. We begin on Tuesday 24th February, and the sessions will start at 2pm and finish by 3.30pm. This is a great opportunity to go deeper into the crucifixion narratives and to think afresh about the unconditional sacrifice made by Christ for each one of us. All are welcome and if you have never been to a Lent group or to a Bible study group why not come along and be part of this group during Lent. It would be helpful to have some idea of numbers. Please let Greg or Sue Masters (firstname.lastname@example.org) know if you are interested.
The next Messy Church takes place at St. Oswald’s in Jardine Crescent on Sunday 15th February at 3.30pm. Lots of fun activities for all the family, plus songs and stories and a meal afterwards.
The Foodbank have requested donations of the following items. Tins of: meat, fish, rice pudding and custard; jars of: pasta sauce, coffee and jam; toilet rolls, toothbrushes, toothpaste and kitchen roll.
If you need your PC, laptop, tablet or TV fixing Chris Reynolds is able to quote a price. His number is 07835 150552.
St. Andrew’s Got Talent
This event is due to take place on Saturday 21st March at Eastern Green Village Hall. We are looking for volunteers for acts. There is a sign-up sheet at the back of church for those interested. Thank you, Victoria Kaczur.
The next Youth Service, led by Ben Martin, takes place on 15th February at 6.30pm. Please support our young people if you are able.
Research Into Sin
Some of you may recall Peter Wright interviewed a number of people from St. Andrew’s for a research project he was undertaking into popular understanding of sin. The results of this research can be read at: https://www.dur.ac.uk/theologyandministry.
Whether you are new to the church or a long-standing member we welcome your comments on the church, churchyard, service, etc. The Visitors Book is located at the back of church.
This week’s altar flowers were kindly donated by a member of the congregation.
