8th February 2015 – Second Sunday before Lent
St. Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
Please note that because of the increased number of babies/toddlers attending St. Andrew’s on Sunday mornings for the 10am service, we have begun to offer a staffed crèche in the side room for the convenience of parents.
Grateful thanks from Greg and Fran for the love and support we received (and tickets to the Open Golf Championship!) on Greg’s installation as Vicar last Sunday. Thanks also to Alex for planning and leading the 140th Anniversary Service and leading the church during Greg’s period of study leave.
Children’s Society Boxes
It’s that time of year again. I will be collecting the boxes throughout February. Please bring yours to church if you can, otherwise I will collect from you at some time in the month. Thank you for your continuing support. Jackie Lynch, 024 7646 7344.
StAPH is Moving!
From 15th February StAPH will be moving into the 6th Form Centre at Woodlands. This is the building on the left after the car park when you enter Woodlands. Come and visit us in our new meeting place!
We are exploring the possibility of developing a team to take home communion to the housebound. Anyone who would like to train for this vital ministry should speak to Greg. Also, if you know of anyone who might like to receive home communion, let Greg know.
We start a sermon series today on Home Groups:
Feb 8th Sue Masters Home Groups and discipleship
Feb 22nd Greg Smith Home Groups and pastoral care
March 1st Greg/Sue Home Groups and mission
Please speak to Sue if you want to know more.
We are still looking for volunteers to join the rota for operating the sound system and powerpoint. Anyone else willing to help should speak to Steve Martin or Steve Wankling.
The party from St. Andrew’s attending Spring Harvest from April 6th-10th at Minehead are still hoping that others might join us. Four nights self catering at Butlins with access to an amazingly full programme of teaching, worship (led by Graham Kendrick), leisure activities and above all fellowship is £189, reduced rates for children. A week pass without accommodation is £114. If interested, please speak to Greg or Fran. There is a social evening at the Vicarage on Friday 20th March at 7pm for all those going.
Valentine’s Dinner Dance
A fabulous Valentine’s night is being hosted by St. Andrew’s at Burton Green Village Hall on 14th February. Tickets are £20, but this includes a four course buffet and high quality live entertainment with all the trimmings you might expect and more. Tickets are available from Fran, Jackie Lynch or Rosemarie Over.
The Foodbank have requested donations of the following items. Tins of: meat, fish, rice pudding and custard; jars of: pasta sauce, coffee and jam; toilet rolls, tooth brushes, toothpaste and kitchen roll.
St. Andrew’s Got Talent
This event is due to take place on Saturday 21st March at Eastern Green Village Hall. We are looking for volunteers for acts. There is a sign-up sheet at the back of church for those interested. Thank you, Victoria Kaczur.
St. Andrew’s Church is running a holiday club on Tuesday 17th February from 9.30am until 12.30pm which is aimed at children of primary school age. The theme will be temptation and there will be lots of crafts, games, stories and songs. If you would like your child to attend, please contact Julie Crow 07756 918847 by Monday 16th February.
In addition to our regular communion service at 10am on Ash Wednesday there will be a further service of Holy Communion with the imposition of ashes at 7pm to mark the start of Lent. All welcome.
Lynda Edwards will be replacing Kate Massey as curate in charge of St Laurence’s Meriden on 23rd February. Lynda’s involvement with St. Andrew’s will be much more limited than Kate’s, only acting as a mentor to the Pram Service. She also has responsibility for Coventry’s Deaf congregation which meets at Christ Church, Cheylesmore.
We are looking forward to Lesley being licensed to St. Andrew’s as a Reader at a special service next Sunday when the Warden of Readers will be preaching. Do remember Lesley in your prayers.
Andrew has kindly written down his life story (testimony) to share with others. Copies of this are available at the back of church for anyone who would like to read this moving account.
Please put our Beetle Drive on your calendars. This will take place at Park Hill School on Friday 6th March at 7pm. Tickets will be available soon.
It feels like Christmas has just ended and already we are planning for Easter at St. Andrew’s! This year we will be running a Lent course on Tuesday afternoons over the five weeks of Lent. This will be an opportunity to come together to reflect on the Passion of Christ using the Bible, reflections and group discussions. We begin on Tuesday 24th February, and the sessions will start at 2pm and finish by 3.30pm. This is a great opportunity to go deeper into the crucifixion narratives and to think afresh about the unconditional sacrifice made by Christ for each one of us. All are welcome and if you have never been to a Lent group or to a Bible study group why not come along and be part of this group during Lent. It would be helpful to have some idea of numbers. Please let Greg or Sue Masters (firstname.lastname@example.org) know if you are interested.
Our next fortnightly Pram Service takes place this Tuesday at 9.15am with Adam and Eve the focus of the story. All parents/carers and their pre-school children welcome. Doors open at 8.45 for refreshments.
The next Messy Church takes place at St. Oswald’s in Jardine Crescent next Sunday, 15th February, at 3.30pm. Lots of fun activities for all the family, plus songs and stories and a meal afterwards.
The next Youth Service, led by Ben Martin, takes place on 15th February at 6.30pm. Please support our young people if you are able.
Our next special service aimed at primary school aged children and their families is on 22nd February at 4pm (and every fourth Sunday).
The next Ignatian Service on Sunday 1st March at 6.30pm will be led by the Bishop of Warwick.
Research into Sin
Some of you may recall Peter Wright interviewed a number of people from St. Andrew’s for a research project he was undertaking into popular understanding of sin. The results of this research can be read at: https://www.dur.ac.uk/theologyandministry.
Ken Starr, who has been on our prayer list for some time, sadly passed away on Thursday evening.
Whether you are new to the church or a long-standing member we welcome your comments on the church, churchyard, service, etc. The Visitors Book is located at the back of church.
This week’s altar flowers were kindly donated by Angela Lamb.
Please pray for Brenda & Neville Lawrence, Colin Sanders, Beryl Poppit, Margaret & Albert Whitehouse, Kay Wilding, Barbara Hesketh, Mary Shepherd, Matt Monnington, Lara Santostefano and Jo Hanney.
