7th February 2016 – Sunday next before Lent
St. Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
Worship and Encounter
This morning sees the second in a three part sermon series on worship, with Dan Smith speaking this morning at Worship 4 All and Greg next week on 14th February. To coincide with this series, we are hosting a special worship event ‘Encounter’ on Sunday 21st February at 6.30pm with extended times of worship to facilitate our encounter with God, without rushing on to the next thing in the service. Please do come and join us. We have invited guest worship leaders from Westwood Church and we want to welcome them by showing our commitment to worship.
The PCC are delighted to announce the appointment of Dawn Easthope as the new leader of the choir. She will be ably supported by our two organists, Michael and Ben. No doubt, George will continue to be available to provide support and advice. We are very grateful to all the choir for their hard work over the last 12 months since George’s retirement, with special thanks to Sue Barnes for all her work. Any queries about the choir should be directed to Dawn in person or at email@example.com.
Please note Greg and Fran will be taking a short holiday from Mon 15th to Weds 17th February inclusive. Enquiries should be directed to the Church Office.
Plans are being finalized to redevelop the porch that serves as the entrance to St. Andrews. We have two objectives in mind: to make the church appear more welcoming and to conserve energy. Accordingly, we will glaze the porch, move the oak doors to replace the gate and install more welcoming doors that are part glazed. This project, which has been funded by a generous legacy should enable us to save on our heating consumption, given how much heat is lost on a Sunday by the doors opening and closing. At the same time, during the day when the church is open, it should be possible for people to see inside without having to open the forbidding oak doors first. Anyone who wishes to comment on this project should speak to Trevor Hill.
Please note our monthly Ignatian Service will take place tonight at 6.30pm led by Kate Dagger and Dawn Easthope and giving opportunity for prayer and meditation.
Seek His Face
Our monthly service of prayer, worship and prophecy takes place next Sunday at 6.30pm. All welcome. The focus of our prayer will be our children and our ministry with them.
A message from foodbank. The most urgently required items at present are nappies and personal hygiene items.
The annual revision of the electoral roll is soon to take place from 21st February to 20th March. If you are already on the electoral roll at St. Andrews, there is no need to do anything. However, if you have joined the church over the last 12 months, we would strongly encourage you to register your membership by joining the roll. See Greg or Lesley Harrison to obtain a form.
Prayer before Service
Anyone who would like to pray before the service would be welcome to join the small group in the upper room between 9.40 and 9.50am.
Our next Pram Service, for pre-school children and their carers, takes place on Tuesday 9th February at 9.15am with refreshments served from 8.45am. The theme of the service is Daniel’s friends, with stories, craft and songs to entertain and educate the little ones.
Please note that St. Andrews will be running a Holiday Club for St. Andrews and Eastern Green children on Monday 22nd February from 9am-3.15pm. This has been arranged to coincide with a Teacher Day for the two schools. The theme of the day led by Greg, Jonathan, Lesley and Selina will be Jonah and the Whale. The cost of the day will be £5, including lunch and drinks. Please bring outdoor footwear and a coat. Enrolment forms are at the back of church. For further information, please contact Julie at firstname.lastname@example.org.
St. Andrew’s Lent Group 2016
Christmas not long forgotten and already Easter is upon us! This year we will again be running a small group during Lent where we will spend time together looking at Scripture as we prepare for the significance of Easter. The group will meet on Thursday afternoons over five weeks starting on Thursday 18th February. We will be using the York Lent Course material The Psalms- prayers for today’s church which focuses on five different Psalms over the five weeks. The afternoon will include a time for fellowship and group discussion as we share together. The afternoons will begin at 2.00pm and finish at 3.30pm and will be held at 55 Handsworth Crescent. All are welcome and if you have never been to a small group or to a Bible study group why not come along and be part of this group during Lent. If you want to know more or you are interested in being part of the group please speak with Sue Masters or email me on email@example.com.
Palm Crosses and Ash Wednesday
In readiness for our Ash Wednesday service at 7pm on 10th February, the congregation are invited to return any palm crosses that have been saved since last Lent. These will be burnt and combined with olive oil to form the ashes with which we will be anointed at the Ashing Service. Please return the crosses to church by Sunday 7th February at the latest.
A new four part youth drama course will be starting on Monday evenings after half term, starting 22nd February at 5.45pm. Our theme this term will be cartoon characters. Anyone aged 8-12 is welcome. Please speak to Greg or Selina if you wish to know more.
As in previous years, on Palm Sunday, 20th March, we will be staging a re-enactment of the Passion story in our Sunday morning service. Anyone who would like to assist with this, either as a performer or as part of the support crew should speak to Greg or Lesley Lee.
