1st May 2016 – Sixth Sunday of Easter
St. Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
Annual General Meeting
At the Annual General Meeting of St. Andrew’s Mathis Baumert was elected and Emma Read was re-elected as churchwarden. Many thanks to Nigel Dawes who has very loyally served St. Andrews over the last two years. The following were elected to the PCC: Richard Marr, Hilary Wankling, Daniel Smith, Diane Wilson, Liz Reed, Paul Crowe, Dawn Easthope, Nick Tooby, Jackie Lynch, Trevor Hill, Steven Warne and Jeremy Thomas. Thank you to the forty plus people who attended. Copies of the annual report are available at the back of church. Please feel free to take a copy home and bring it back when you have read it.
The boxes for 2015/16 have been emptied and counted and a cheque for £1354.34 has been sent to the Children’s Society. Sincere thanks to all box holders for your loyal and generous support. It’s amazing how a little loose change can amount to so much! See you next year. Jackie Lynch.
A volunteer is needed to take over a round on Upper Eastern Green Lane: 192-230, 240-288 and 294-298 (46 magazines in total). If someone is willing to take over this round I would be very grateful. Prayer before Service
Anyone who would like to pray before the service would be welcome to join the small group in the choir pews between 9.40 and 9.50am. Please be aware that there is always prayer available after the service for any issue of concern.
Eastern Green’s Got Talent
Many thanks to all those who supported Eastern Green’s Got Talent last night, both the acts who so bravely performed and those who came along to cheer them on. Congratulations to Zoe Hutchinson, whose beautiful singing narrowly won her first prize. Special thanks to Victoria for all her hard work as chief organizer. £308 was raised to be shared jointly with Eastern Green Village Hall.
Tile Hill Job Club
The Tile Hill Hob Club is now running very successfully, but needs more volunteers who can help people put together a CV and look for work or serve refreshments. Training can be provided. If you want to know more contact Anne Richardson, email@example.com or come along Thursdays 2-4pm in St. Oswald’s Church Hall.
Supper n Chat
After many successful years of running Lunch n Chat, a support group for those who have been bereaved, we are extending our support to the bereaved by offering an evening group on Thursday evenings, commencing June 16th. We are looking for a small group of volunteers to help with this. If you would like more information, please speak to Rita Muir.

Our next Ignatian Service takes place on tonight at 6.30pm when there will be an Ascension theme.
The Church’s Annual Plant Sale will take place on Saturday 14th May between 10am and 12pm. Donation of plants for sale will be gratefully received by Trevor Hill or David Griffiths. Please do your best to attend this sale as there will be bargains galore of a variety of plants.
Andrew has sent a letter to the congregation which is available to read at the back of church.
Cursillo (Spanish for short course and pronounced Kerr-see-o) is a wonderful way of Christians recharging/refreshing their faith designed for lay people. The next Cursillo weekend takes place from 21st-23rd October near Shipston. There is an information social evening on Saturday 7th May at the Vicarage if you would like to find out more. Anyone is warmly welcome to come along and hear more about it, but please advise Fran or Greg of your attendance for catering purposes.
St. Andrew’s are supporting the establishment of a youth café running out of Jardine Youth Centre on Mondays straight after school. There is a training session on Monday 9th May from 4-7pm. for all would be volunteers. Please speak to Greg if you wish to know more.
Spiritual Gifts Workshop
Greg and Jonathan will be leading a spiritual gifts workshop on Saturday 7th May from 10am-12 noon in the church upper room. This is intended to be a beginner’s guide exploring what is meant by ‘spiritual gifts’ e.g. prophecy, healing and speaking in tongues, helping us to identify what gifts God may have given us and providing a safe opportunity to try them those gifts out (perhaps for the first time). Those more familiar with spiritual gifts are also welcome to attend to encourage others.
The start of our Alpha course has been delayed by a fortnight until Weds 4th May. We still need more takers if the course is to go ahead. It is a wonderful way of meeting new people at Church and refreshing or learning the Christian basics.
If you are able to help with catering next term’s Alpha course at the Vicarage on Wednesday evenings, please speak to Fran. You will be reimbursed for any expenditure.
Alpha on Bannersbrook
An Alpha course is starting on Bannersbrook on Thursdays from May 5th. Alpha is a fantastic way to discuss life and the Christian faith in a relaxed environment. If you are interested in helping or attending, please get in touch! If you are unable to make Thursdays, get in touch with Julie (firstname.lastname@example.org) about the course that starts in the Vicarage on Wednesday 4th May.
You are encouraged to join the diocesan pilgrimage which takes place from May 5th (Ascension) to May 15th (Pentecost). We are planning to walk sections of the Coventry Way (3-4 miles) on Friday May 6th, Sat May 7th, Fri May 13th and Sun May 15th. If you are unable to do the walking but would like to use this period for prayer, booklets are available to help. Further details available from Greg or on our website.
Ascension and Pentecost Booklet
Steve Warne and Greg Smith have produced a booklet that is designed to be used during the period between Ascension (May 5th) and Pentecost (May 15th). The booklet provides a short reading and reflection, a prayer pointer and a simple action for each day on the theme of spiritual gifts. The booklets are available at the back of church for anyone to take.
Pentecost – 15th May 2016
Please note that our Pentecost service on Sunday, 15th May, 2016, will commence at 11.00 am – NOT 10.00 am. Pentecost is the festival when we celebrate the amazing gift of the Holy Spirit. It is also regarded as the birthday of the Christian church, and the start of the church’s mission in the world. Such a special event should be celebrated in style and this year, as part of the festivities, YOU ARE ALL INVITED to join in a Bring and Share Lunch which will be held in Eastern Green Social Club after the service. We hope this will be a time of joy, fun and fellowship and there will, of course, be a celebration cake. The celebration will culminate with a balloon release sharing our Good News and blessings to the local community (and beyond). Daytime Home Group
Looking for a space to meet with others and look at the Bible and aspects of faith? Want to be part of a Home Group that meets during the day? We are starting a day time Home group on Thursday 19th May. The group will meet on a fortnightly basis on Thursday mornings from 10.30am to 12.00 noon at Norah Hall’s House. The topic for the group in the first six weeks will be The Lord’s Prayer; looking at the prayer Jesus gave to his disciples and discussing how and when we use it and what it means to us. Lollipop School Crossing Patrol – Churchill Lollipoppers
There is a new initiative between Churchill and Channel 4 to try and improve the current shortage of lollipop crossing patrol personnel. This scheme is giving schools the chance to receive funding for a churchill lollipopper. Lollipoppers ensure the safety of children on their school run. If you would like to nominate St. Andrew’s School for a chance to receive funding for a churchill lollipopper it is really quick and easy, just log on to www.churchill.com/lollipoppers and help us keep our children safe during their journey to and from school. Thank you.
Please note that the Church will be in use as a polling station on Thursday 5th May for the local elections. It is still available for prayer.
Party in the Park
The third Party in the Park will take place in Juniper Park, Woodridge Avenue, Allesley Green tomorrow, Monday 2nd May from 1-5pm. Attractions include the Coventry Festival Band, Speak Brother Rock band, Fairground rides, donkey rides, bouncy castles, the great Allesley Green Bake Off and a fancy dress competition (for details see below) and the Wasps rugby zone. We need volunteers who would be willing to give an hour or two that afternoon to staff stalls and rides etc. Please speak to Greg if you are able to help. We are also selling raffle tickets in advance for £1 a strip, with a fabulous array of prizes. Finally, we would be grateful for any cake donations for the cake stall. No cake will be entered in the cake competition unless requested.
Bake for the Queen
Allesley Green is hosting its own Bake off competition. Your challenge is to bake a cake fit for the Queen, whose 90th birthday we will soon be celebrating. Prizes will be awarded in four categories: under 14 best taste; under 14 best presentation; over 14 best taste and over 14 best presentation. Judging will take place at Party in the Park on Monday May 2nd at 1.15pm with international stars from the Wasps. Cakes must be delivered to the site by 12.30pm to be eligible. Cakes will be sold afterwards to cover the cost of the event. Anyone attending Party in the Park is eligible to enter.
Dress for the Queen
Also, in celebration of the Queen’s birthday, at approximately 3pm on Monday 2nd May at Party in the Park, there will be a fancy dress competition. You are invited to dress as a member of the Royal Family past or present, British or foreign. Prizes will be awarded in age categories. Enter on the day by presenting yourself to the stage.
