19th February 2017 – Second Sunday before Lent
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
As it is the start of half term this week Children’s Church will not be meeting during today’s service. We will open again next week. The crèche will be open today in the side room.
Crèche and Children’s Church
Good news – the number of children on roll is increasing, so we really need more volunteers to support the activities in Crèche and Children’s Church. You will not be asked to plan anything or lead activities, just be there to help! With a few more volunteers, we would only call on your services once every few months. Please speak to Becky or Hilary if you can help.
We are delighted to welcome Revd Lynnette Clarke to the team at St Andrew’s. Lynnette is a retired priest, former Vicar of St Albans, Stoke Heath and Associate Minister at St Christopher’s Allesley Park. We do respect the fact that Lynnette is retired but are very grateful for her contributions to our ministry. Do make a point of introducing yourself to her.
You will be given a very short survey to complete this morning. We would be grateful if all members would complete this, whether you have been coming to St Andrew’s very long or not. Only one off visitors should avoid filling out the questionnaire which shouldn’t take more than a minute. Please return the survey to a sidesperson at the end of the service or place folded in half in the cardboard box.
Pilgrim Course – ‘A Course for the Christian Journey’
The Pilgrim Course is designed to help you explore the journey of faith in a reflective and conversational way. We will be holding a Pilgrim Course at St Andrew’s during Lent aimed primarily at those who are enquiring about and exploring God, faith and their own journey with Jesus. It will run for six weeks on Wednesday evenings from 8th March to 12th April and the theme for these evenings is ‘Turning to Christ’. We will be meeting at the Vicarage starting at 7pm with a shared meal. If you would like to join us or want to know more, please speak with Sue Masters (07958 322026) or Greg.
Catering Volunteers Required
We are looking for volunteers to cater for the Pilgrim Course. We need people to cater for 15th, 22nd, 29th March and 5th and 12th April. If you are able to help please could you speak to Fran Smith.
Children’s Society Boxes
The boxes will be collected and counted throughout February and March. You can either bring your box to church or I will collect from you. I take this opportunity of thanking you for your continuing support for this worthy charity. Jackie Lynch.
Safeguarding at St Andrew’s
The new C1 safeguarding courses are now available. Dates and venues are now on the notice board at the back of church. A good mix of churches within each training session allows us to learn from each other by sharing best practise and experiences. Please book your place early to avoid disappointment and also let me (Linda – your PSO) know. I will then issue you with your certificate on completion.
If you have retained your palm crosses from last year, you are invited to return them to church by Sunday 26th February so that they can be used in the preparation for the Ash Wednesday Service on 1st March at 7pm. All warmly invited to this moving service, which will include Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes.
Diversity and Inclusion
St Andrew’s is looking to set up a Diversity and Inclusion working party to help us think about how we can effectively welcome all people into our fellowship. If you are interested in joining this small group, please speak to Greg or Steve Warne
Please note that the next joint St Andrew’s and Allesley Green Residents Association Quiz Night will take place at the Massey Ferguson Social Club on Friday 31st March. Please note that this is different from the previous date advertised in the Link. Tickets are £9 for adults and £5 children and are now available from Veronika or Julie at email@example.com.
Drama club starts up again at Jardine Youth Centre on Monday 6th March at 5.45pm for an hour. Open to anyone aged 8-12. Speak to Greg or Selina for more info.
Winter Night Shelter
Our friends and neighbours at St Oswalds are once again hosting the winter night shelter on Friday evenings through the winter. They provide a safe and warm place to sleep for the homeless. The project always needs more volunteers. If you are considering volunteering, please speak to Greg or Anne Richardson. Or contact Father Nick direct.
Good Neighbours Project
Anyone interested in volunteering for the Good Neighbours project or would like to know more about this really important new project visiting older, isolated people in the area should contact Jess Day-Pollard at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The 3rd Eastern Green’s Got Talent Show will take place at the Village Hall on Saturday 11th March. Cash prize of £30 for the winner, to take part please contact Victoria Kaczur at email@example.com or Julie Crow at firstname.lastname@example.org. Tickets are available for £5 adults (12 and over) and £3 children (11 and under).
In addition to our regular Wednesday morning service of Holy Communion at 10am there will be a service at 7pm to include the imposition of ashes to mark the start of Lent. If anyone is willing to arrive half an hour and act as sidesperson, please speak to Greg.
Count Your Blessings
In recent years, many people have found following Christian Aid’s Count Your Blessings scheme during Lent very helpful. There are sheets available at the back of church for adults and children that enable you to count your blessings through the course of Lent e.g. by counting how many hot meals we have in a day or how many times we turn on a tap to access clean water, resulting in our making an appropriate donation to Christian Aid at the end of Lent to support those around the world who do not have these blessings.
CAP Coventry: A message from Ian Burton, its Director
The Coventry CAP (Christians Against Poverty) debt centre has been up and running almost 2 years. We take on 1 new client a week and have had contact with 88 families so far. However, 40% of these do not get to the point of sorting out their debt (a figure consistent across all of the 260 CAP debt centres). This can be at the very beginning of the process (i.e. not even answering calls) or 6 months down the line. This is obviously very frustrating but we have to accept that we can only help those who want to be helped. This means of course that 60% of our clients are accepting help and are moving to become debt free. And even with the 40% we believe we are sowing seeds!! We have seen 3 people come to faith and numerous others start a journey with Jesus or begin again that awesome journey. This is our heart, to see people become debt free but more importantly to follow Jesus. Thank you for your prayers for what we do. If you could let your congregation know the ongoing need for befrienders and for people to pray whilst we are on visits, that would be brilliant.
