19th March 2017 – Third Sunday of Lent
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
From September, St Andrew’s is looking to employ a half-time Children’s Worker. If you would like further information about this, please contact Julie, our administrator, at firstname.lastname@example.org or see the advert on our website or for an informal conversation, please speak to Greg or Hilary Wankling. The deadline for an application is April 7th.
The Bishop of Coventry will be visiting the parish tomorrow morning. He will planting a yew tree in St Andrew’s Churchyard at 10am in celebration of our being the first church in the diocese to receive the eco-church bronze award; and then at 10.30am opening the newly refurbished Juniper Park in Allesley Green. All welcome at either brief event.
Anne has recently decided to move on from her role as Development Officer for the Church Together in Tile Hill and seek an alternative church placement to complement her theological training for ordination, which she continues at St Mellitus. Do pray for her as she hands over the reins at the Church Together by April 16th and as she seeks the right placement to give her a wider experience of life in the Church of England before her curacy.
Allesley Green Prayer
There is a new prayer group being launched in and for Allesley Green that meets for the first time on Tuesday 28th March at 7.30pm at 14 New Ash Drive. All welcome.
Twice a year up to 100 churches of different denominations gather together in the city to worship God as an act of united witness and concerted prayer. The next such event happens at the Welcome Centre, Parkside, next Sunday, March 19th at 6.30pm. Discover what it’s like to worship alongside many hundreds of other Christians by coming along. Speak to Greg if you would like a lift.
Open the Book
The Open the Book team, which Kate Howarth, has kindly agreed to coordinate, led its first assembly at St Andrew’s School last week. If anyone else wants to join the team to tell bible stories using simple drama, they should speak to Kate or Greg.
Diversity and Inclusion
St Andrew’s is looking to set up a Diversity and Inclusion working party to help us think about how we can effectively welcome all people into our fellowship. If you are interested in joining this small group, please speak to Greg or Steve Warne
Please note that the next joint St Andrew’s and Allesley Green Residents Association Quiz Night will take place at the Massey Ferguson Social Club on Friday 31st March. Please note that this is different from the previous date advertised in the Link. Tickets are £9 for adults and £5 children and are now available from Julie on 07756 918847 or email@example.com or from Veronika.
Count Your Blessings
In recent years, many people have found following Christian Aid’s Count Your Blessings scheme during Lent very helpful. There are sheets available at the back of church for adults and children that enable you to count your blessings through the course of Lent e.g. by counting how many hot meals we have in a day or how many times we turn on a tap to access clean water, resulting in our making an appropriate donation to Christian Aid at the end of Lent to support those around the world who do not have these blessings.
Communion on Palm Sunday
There will be an additional service on Palm Sunday, April 9th, this year, at 8am., a said communion. All welcome.
Walk of Witness on Good Friday
The annual Walk of Witness on Good Friday will be starting at Sutton Avenue Shops at 11.30am, finishing at St Oswalds at 12 noon for the joint Good Friday service. All welcome!
At 9.15am on Saturday 25th March, in the side room, we will be making posies for Mothering Sunday. Can you spare half an hour to help? Please let me know if you can. Thank you, Ann Dove.
Dan & Phillipa Munday
Please see the latest prayer letter from our mission partners, Dan and Phillipa who are working in Nepal. It is in the red folder at the back of church. If you would like your own copy for prayer, please contact Julie.
Easter Egg Hunts
Please note there will be Easter Egg hunts on Saturday 8th April at Bannerbrook Park in the morning and in Allesley Green at Juniper Park in the afternoon, from 2pm.
Kidz Klub Easter Eggs
Kidz Klub Tile Hill who we have historically supported and who sent Anya and Phil to speak to Worship 4 All earlier this month are looking to give a Real Easter Egg at a cost of £4 to each of the children with whom they work. They are looking to the partner churches to support this. If you are willing to give £4 towards one egg, please place it in a clearly marked envelope.
On Palm Sunday, April 9th, we will be dramatizing the Passion story in place of our 10am. service. We are looking to recruit cast members (a number of the roles are non-speaking); as well as costume makers and a stage manager. It is a very powerful thing to watch and even more powerful to take part in. Anyone willing to get involved in this performance should contact Greg.
If anyone has any old curtains that might be used for the Palm Sunday drama, please speak to Jackie Page.
Weekly Giving Envelopes
Thanks to everyone who donates each week to St Andrew’s using the Weekly Giving Envelopes. April sees the start of a new Tax Year so new boxes of envelopes for the next twelve months are at the back of the church. Should anyone wish to join the envelope scheme please contact Richard Marr (01676 522697). Regular giving by envelope or by Standing Order helps us plan the church’s finances in the coming year and we are most grateful to all those who give regularly every week or every month. If you are a regular giver and a tax payer but haven’t already completed a Gift Aid Form, please do so as soon as possible to enable us to recover the tax you have already paid on your giving. Should you wish to increase the amount you put in the weekly envelopes or your Standing Order, please do so any time as you do not need to complete a new Gift Aid Form. Last year we recovered £11760 from the Inland Revenue as a result of your Gift Aid Giving.
We are looking for volunteers to make cakes for Party in the Park on 1st May. Please speak to Fran if you are able to help.
CAP Coventry: A message from Ian Burton, its Director
The Coventry CAP (Christians Against Poverty) debt centre has been up and running almost 2 years. We take on 1 new client a week and have had contact with 88 families so far. However, 40% of these do not get to the point of sorting out their debt (a figure consistent across all of the 260 CAP debt centres). This can be at the very beginning of the process (i.e. not even answering calls) or 6 months down the line. This is obviously very frustrating but we have to accept that we can only help those who want to be helped. This means of course that 60% of our clients are accepting help and are moving to become debt free. And even with the 40% we believe we are sowing seeds!! We have seen 3 people come to faith and numerous others start a journey with Jesus or begin again that awesome journey. This is our heart, to see people become debt free but more importantly to follow Jesus. Thank you for your prayers for what we do. If you could let your congregation know the ongoing need for befrienders and for people to pray whilst we are on visits, that would be brilliant. To see some stories about what we do please see the sheet on the noticeboard at the back of church. To find out more, contact Ian Burton at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please pray for Irene Lissaman, George Cooke, Ann Crowley, Flix Haynes, Fred Edwards, Derek Shale, Jean Selby, Mary Lee, Colin & Pauline Smith, Beryl Poppit, Lara Santostefano, Brenda Lawrence, Rosemary Pottinger, Pam Bennell, Jo Hanney, Hannah Miller and Trevor Ratcliffe. To add names to the list please contact Julie at email@example.com or 07756 918847.
