Pews News – 10th December 2017

10th December 2017 – Second Sunday of Advent

St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Christmas Toy Appeal
Many thanks to all those who have contributed so generously to our Christmas toy appeal. The toys under our Christmas tree will be donated to families in Coventry who might otherwise have nothing on Christmas Day.

To Stanley and Lucia who were married yesterday at St Andrew’s.

Flower Rota 2018
The 2018 flower rota is now at the back of church. If you would like to put your name down for a week, please do.

Lantern Walk
Today, 10th December, from 4-6pm we will be running the Lantern Walk (with donkeys!) on Bannerbrook Park, meeting at the Penny Farthing. All welcome!

Bible Page Numbers
We have asked readers to announce page numbers when introducing bible readings. For those of you who don’t like to be rushed in finding the right page, please note the page numbers are recorded in Pews News each week. Having bought 20 new bibles, it would be great if lots more people were following the readings.

Carol Service
All are welcome at our annual Carol Service, held next Sunday at 6.30pm. Please come early for a good seat.

Please note that the Nightingales concert on 10th December has been cancelled because of illness for Pat Trickett, their musical director. Please do pray for her as she awaits surgery.

Christmas Services
Greg would like to hear from anyone who would like to act as sidesperson at the carol service or read at the midnight service or Christmas Day services.

Thank you
Thank you so much for the get well cards and messages I received during my recent stay in hospital, and for all your prayers which have helped me and my family over the last couple of weeks. We have felt truly blessed. Beryl and Stan Cooper.

Link Deliverer Needed
Volunteer to take over a round in Sutton Avenue. 153-203 and 162-204 (52 copies). Perhaps someone who lives there or close to would consider this delivery round. Please see or contact Barbara Warner 02476 403458/07846 288036. Many thanks in anticipation.

Safeguarding Course 0
Many thanks to all those who have successfully completed Safeguarding Course 0. Over 70 members of the congregation have now obtained a certificate, either by doing the course online or by attending a briefing session delivered by Linda Chylinski. We are immensely grateful to Lin for all her hard work on our behalf. For those members who have been unable to complete the course to date, there are two further sessions being offered at church on Wednesday 7th February at 7.30pm and Saturday 17th February at 10am. If required to complete the course, please advise Julie, our administrator, which session you plan to attend or notify her if you choose to complete the course online instead.

Safeguarding Pro Forma
Those people who attended C0 training will be aware there is now a pro forma for recording concerns or allegations of abuse within a church. This form is now pinned onto the noticeboard at the back of church should it be required. Thank you, Linda Chylinski.

Carols in the Close
Allesley Green Residents Association and St Andrew’s Church are jointly hosting Carols in the Close on Tuesday 19th December at 6.30pm in Birch Close, Allesley Green. Last year, in excess of 150 people turned up for a very special event.

Bible Video Project
St Andrew’s will be making a short video in the new year, interviewing people about what they get out of reading the bible. We are looking for volunteers to speak to camera for about 40 seconds. We are looking for people who don’t mind talking about the difficulties as well as the joys of bible reading. If you might be interested, please speak to Sue Masters.

Job Club
The Tile Hill Job Club, one of the great successes in which the church is involved, is looking for non-specialist volunteers to supplement the team, as welcomers, people with basic IT skills to help assist with job hunts and people to can spare a listening ear. For more information, please speak to Dawn Easthope at

Pram Service
Our final Pram Service of 2017 will take place at 9.15am on Tuesday 12th December. We will be saying farewell to Lynda who has led us for the last three years, as well as celebrating the nativity story. All pre-school children and their carers welcome.
