Pews News – 28th January 2018

28th January 2018 – Fourth Sunday of Epiphany

St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

First Sunday
Next week sees our regular first Sunday pattern of communion at 8am; Worship 4 All at 10am and the Ignatian Service at 6.30pm.

Christians Against Poverty
Are looking for volunteers to act as befrienders, who will accompany one of the Christians Against Poverty staff as they visit clients in the area who are trying to free themselves from debt. For further information, contact or speak to Greg.

Link Deliverers
The Link is ready for collection in the side room, if you deliver or are able to take to someone who does near to you, we would be grateful if you could take the bundle for delivery … many thanks. Barbara Warner.

Pram Service 13th February
There will be a pancake race after the Pram Service on Shrove Tuesday. All parents/grandparents/carers/babies and toddlers are welcome to join in the fun! There will be a pancake breakfast and crafts for the children from 8.45am, with a baby and toddler friendly service beginning at 9.15am. If you would like to come it would be helpful if you could let Emma know by emailing her at or phone Hilary on 07980 596646.

Palm Crosses
If you are able, please return your Palm Crosses by Sunday 11th February. Leave them at the back of church, and they will be burnt to produce ash for our Ash Weds service, which takes place on February 14th at 7pm. The service consists of the imposition of ashes, the Ash Wednesday litany and Holy Communion. All welcome. Anyone willing to act as sidesperson or read at the service should speak to Phil or Greg.

Easter Raffle
To raise funds for the church we intend to hold an Easter raffle and would be grateful for donations of prizes. If you are able to donate please pass you item(s) to Charley Watts or Linda Chylinski. Thank you.

Sunday Service Rota Volunteer
We are looking for more volunteers to read a lesson, take the elements up to the altar, dress the altar before the service or act as sidespersons during the Sunday morning service. Please give consideration as to whether you could take on one or more of these roles. With sufficient volunteers your services would only be needed about once or twice in each three month period. For more information, please speak to Steve Wankling or Greg.

Courses provided by Age UK
Age UK have forwarded details of several courses that are available which include paper crafts, photography, oil painting, woodworking skills and lots more. Please see the red folder at the back of church for further details.

Flower Rota 2018
The 2018 flower rota is now at the back of church. There are still lots of spaces so if you would like to put your name down for a week, please do.

Bible Page Numbers
We have asked readers to announce page numbers when introducing bible readings. For those of you who don’t like to be rushed in finding the right page, please note the page numbers are recorded in Pews News each week. Having bought 20 new bibles, it would be great if lots more people were following the readings.

Please note that Greg and Fran will be on holiday from 31st Jan to 9th Feb inclusive to prepare for and then recover from Dan’s wedding on the 3rd. We would value your prayers for this special family occasion.

Kidz Praise
The next Kidz Praise service takes place on Thursday 1st February at 3.15pm led by Phil. Stories, song and craft. An informal gathering for primary school children and their families.  Arrive any time between 3.15pm and 4pm.

Days Off
We thought it might be helpful to know when Church staff are not available.
Greg & Phil’s day off is usually Friday.
Emma is off from 6pm Friday until 9am Sunday.
Julie’s working hours are 8am-2pm Monday & Wednesday and 8am-12pm Friday
Please only disturb them in the event of death or serious illness.

Parish Safeguarding Course 0 (the basic module)
Everyone who has a volunteer role at St Andrew’s Church should now have received a letter from Greg regarding the completion of Parish Safeguarding Course 0. If you have not received this then please contact Julie on 07756 918847 or The Course can be completed online by visiting and clicking on “online basic safeguarding awareness training”. This should take approximately an hour to complete, at the end of which you will be invited to download a certificate. When you have done this, please email a copy of the certificate to Julie who will forward this to Linda Chylinski (our Safeguarding Officer). Please do this by 17th February. Alternatively, you may attend one of our training sessions in church on Wednesday 7th February at 7.30pm or Saturday 17th February at 10am. Please let Julie know if you will be attending the training session. Thank you.

Safeguarding Course 1
On the noticeboard in church, I have put up Course 1 dates from now until end of March. Details of how to book are also with it, but if in doubt, please contact me. Anyone who is involved with children and/or vulnerable adults needs to attend this course every couple of years please. Thanks, Linda Chylinski.

Those people who attended C0 training will be aware there is now a pro forma for recording concerns or allegations of abuse within a church. This form is now pinned onto the noticeboard at the back of church should it be required. Thank you, Linda Chylinski.

Bible Video Project
St Andrew’s will be making a short video in the coming weeks, interviewing people about what they get out of reading the bible. We are looking for volunteers to speak to camera for about 40 seconds. We are looking for people who don’t mind talking about the difficulties as well as the joys of bible reading. If you might be interested, please speak to Sue Masters.
