Pews News – 23rd September 2018

23rd September 2018 – Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Next Sunday
Godfrey Armitage, who is Chair of the Diocesan Environment Group, will be preaching at our communion service next Sunday. We look forward to giving him a very warm welcome.

Ella Joy Richardson
A baby girl, Ella Joy, was born to Phil & Anne Richardson in the early hours of Monday 27th August at 9 lbs 7 ½ ozs. Do continue to pray for them as a family. Phil’s paternity leave continues until October 6th.

Harvest Flowers
Volunteers are needed please to help decorate the church for Harvest on Saturday 6th October at 9.15am in the side room. If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of the Harvest flowers it would be much appreciated. Thank you. Ann Dove.

The Font
You will see that the 1975 font has now been removed from the church. The top section has been retained and it is hoped may be used as an ornamental feature in the churchyard. The new carved oak font is now in situ and will be dedicated by the Archdeacon Pastor, Sue Field, tonight at 6.30pm at a special Songs of Praise service. The Nightingales choir have kindly agreed to help lead worship. Please do join us for this very special occasion.

St Andrew’s and St Andy’s Light Party
We are holding a Light Party for primary aged children on Wednesday 31st October in church from 5-6.30pm. There will be lots of fun with crafts, games, songs and a snack tea. Registration forms are available from Hilary, Emma Wildman or Shirley. For more information contact Hilary on 07980 596646 or Emma on 07969 066979. There is no charge for this event.

We now have a band of volunteers who have agreed to take on the cleaning of the church. It would be helpful still to have one or two more. If you would like to know more about what it entails please speak to Greg, Fran or Jackie Lynch.

Sponsored Walk
We are nearly at our target of £2,500 raised through our sponsored walk last month. If you have been kind enough to sponsor us, please settle up as soon as you can. If you didn’t, additional gifts will still be gratefully received.

Social Committee
A new Social Committee is being set up to coordinate the Church’s social events. The committee won’t be responsible for all events, but for ensuring there is a good, balanced programme. If you’re interested in helping with this, please speak to Rosemarie Over.

Parish Weekend 10th-12th May 2019
Now that summer is over why not look ahead to next Spring and join us on the Parish weekend.  Following a successful weekend this year we are doing it again in 2019 and would love you to join us. The cost will be £150 for adults with reductions for children and we will operate a saving scheme if that helps make it possible for you. There will be an early bird discount of £10 for those signing up before end of November. Places are going fast so if you are interested or would like more information please speak with Sue Masters or Greg. For those already signed up we are happy to take deposits or to start your saving plan. Please speak with Sue about this.

We regularly review our work and as part of this process, I have updated our Safeguarding children’s policy and written a new policy for safeguarding vulnerable adults. These policies have now been formally adopted by the PCC, and are available for all to read. They are pinned at the back of church on the notice board. Lin Chylinski.

Fundraising for Selah
A 9-year-old girl, Selah, a pupil at Eastern Green Junior School has recently very sadly been diagnosed with Chiari 1 Malformation and Neuro-Cranio-Vertebral Syndrome (Filum Disease). This is a rare and complex condition, causing numerous neurological and structural problems related to her brain and spine. Heartbreakingly, this condition has dramatically affected Selah’s mobility and has meant that a once very active, vibrant child, who has a passion for dancing and singing, has to now greatly depend upon a wheelchair to get around. The condition has left her suffering with constant pain, which sometimes becomes excruciating. The hope of her family is that they can raise enough funds to be able to take Selah over to Barcelona, in order for her to have life changing treatment, restoring her health and giving her back her mobility. Further details and access to the fundraising page can be found at:

In case you hadn’t heard the news, admission to Coventry Cathedral is now free, although donations are invited. If you’ve never taken the opportunity to look round this historic building, why not take the chance.

Comedy & Curry
A great evening is promised on Friday 12th October at the Village Hotel. Award winning (and very funny) comedian, Andy Kind, is appearing, having been invited by local churches. There is a two-course meal provided by the Village and a great opportunity to socialise with friends and make new ones. Tickets which are in very limited supply cost £18 and are available from Rita Muir. Please ensure you provide your meal choice at the same time as you purchase your ticket.

Sidespersons Rota
After a number of years in the role, Steve Wankling is going to retire in the Autumn from his responsibility for drawing up the termly Sidespersons/Readers rota. We are looking for a volunteer to take this on. Please speak to Steve if you would like further information about what is entailed.

We will be celebrating Harvest this year on two consecutive Sundays 7th and 14th October. Gifts of long-life food and fresh vegetables will be passed on to the foodbank in Tile Hill. Monetary gifts will be given to DFN UK, a charity that provides dignity and freedom for the poor, the marginalised and outcastes in South Asia.

Churchyard Fund
The PCC are keen to maintain the churchyard at its most pleasing, but it costs money we don’t have to pay for a full cutting, strimming and tidying regime. Anyone wishing to give to a churchyard fund too address this should place any gift in a clearly marked envelope.

We are looking for people to write devotions for us to post on our Facebook page. We would like to be posting more regularly and feel this would be something to engage people and encourage everyone to take some time out of their busy lifestyle and sit and reflect. If you are interested or would like some more information, please email Carys on or speak to Greg.
