17th March 2019 – The Second Sunday of Lent
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
The Link Magazine
Apologies that the first digital version of the Link was delayed in being posted for the first of the month. The teething problems have been resolved and the magazine is now available to be viewed at http://standrews-eg.org.uk/ or on the St Andrews Facebook page. In the coming months, it will be posted on the 1st of every month.
Every six years, our Electoral Roll has to be renewed. 2019 is such a year. Everyone who has previously been on the Electoral Roll should fill out a very short form to reapply. There are a number of advantages to being on the Electoral Roll around rights to baptism, funerals and weddings, as well as eligibility for church office and voting rights at the AGM. It is also vital to St Andrew’s to have the most reliable record of its membership, so we would urge everyone to take 2 minutes to do this. Forms are available from Greg, Phil or Lesley Harrison, our Electoral Roll officer. Anyone who lives in the parish or who has worshipped at St Andrew’s for 6 months or more is eligible.
Many thanks to all those who completed the discipleship survey. Results have been encouraging. 77% of the congregation now say they pray most days compared to 73% in 2015. 35% of the congregation say that they read the Bible most days compared to 28% in 2015. We seek to encourage you to do these things. Please let one of the clergy or Sue or Lesley know how we may support/encourage you in this.
We were saddened at the news of the death of Mary Lee. A memorial service will be hosted at St Andrew’s for her friends and family on Thursday 28th March at 1.30pm.
Kidz Klub Easter Egg Appeal
Kidz Klub gives each child who comes to the Easter special club an Easter egg. Following last year’s success, we would love to give at least some of the children real Easter eggs. The cost of the eggs is about four times our budget for Easter eggs, which is why we’re asking for help from our partner churches. We would love you to ask your congregations to either buy a real Easter egg for a Kidz Klub child, or make a donation so that we can purchase them on their behalf. A sign-up sheet can be found at the back of church. Please note that donations are needed by Monday 25th March. Thank you.
If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of the Easter flowers please see Ann Dove.
Mother’s Day Posies
Volunteers needed on Saturday 30th March at 9.15am to make up posies for Mother’s Day. Thank you. Ann Dove.
We would encourage to take up one of two challenges this Lent. Count Your Blessings (which features at Worship 4 All last week) is a Christian Aid venture, encouraging us to note how blessed we are in the western world compared to the poor in developing countries. At the end of Lent, we are invited to make a donation to Christian Aid to help them lift others out of poverty. Alternatively, you may like to take on our Plastic-Free Lent Challenge. There is again a sheet at the back of church or it can be found posted on our website at standrews-eg.org.uk. Can you take some simple steps to reduce the amount of plastic you use?
We will be dramatizing the story of the last week of Jesus’ life on Palm Sunday, April 14th, at our 10am service. Greg would be pleased to hear from anyone who would like to help with this, whether by a small acting part or costumes or in any other way. There is a planning meeting after the service this morning for anyone interested.
St Andrew’s Lent Group 2019
It’s nearly Pancake Day and the season of Lent is almost here. Lent is a time of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter and as part of that reflection, why not join us in the Lent group. This year we will be meeting on Monday mornings from 10.30am to 12 noon at 55 Handsworth Crescent, starting on Monday 11th March for five weeks. Each week will be a time of fellowship and an opportunity to look at the Bible together, sharing with each other in group discussion. All are welcome and if you have never been to a small group or to a Bible study group why not come along and be part of this group during Lent. If you want to know more or you are interested in being part of the group please speak with Sue Masters or email me on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Children’s Society Boxes
It’s that time of year again! The annual collection of the boxes. If you could bring your box to church, or alternatively I will collect from you. Once again, I take the opportunity to thank all of you who have stayed loyal to this worthy charity for so long. I cannot believe I have been collecting from you for 21 years! Look forward to seeing you soon. Jackie Lynch
Weekly Giving Envelopes
Thanks to everyone who donates regularly to St Andrew’s and St Andy’s. April sees the start of a new Tax Year so new boxes of Weekly Giving Envelopes for the next twelve months are at the back of the church. Should anyone wish to join the Envelope scheme please contact Richard Marr (01676 522697). Regular giving by Envelope or by Standing Order helps us plan the church’s finances in the coming year and we are most grateful to all those who give regularly every week or every month. If you are a regular giver and a tax payer but haven’t already completed a Gift Aid Form, please do so as soon as possible to enable us to recover the tax you have already paid on your giving. Forms can be found in the dispenser at the back of the church. Should you wish to increase the amount you put in the Weekly Giving Envelope or your Standing Order, please do so any time as you do not need to complete a new Gift Aid Form. Last year we recovered £14898 from the Inland Revenue as a result of your Gift Aid Giving.
Invitation to Ella Joy Richardson’s Baptism
Phil and Anne Richardson would love to invite you to be a part of Ella Joy’s baptism on Sunday 28th April at 2.30pm in St James Church, Leamington Road, CV3 6GT (where Anne is serving her curacy). It will be followed by drinks and cake in the Church Centre. Thank you so much for all your love and support over the last few months, we really hope you can join us to officially welcome her to the Christian family. Please see the invitation at the back of church.
Thanks to all those who supported recent social events: Elvis Tribute and Quiz Night. There was a fantastic turnout for each and between the two events £1250 raised towards church funds. Sadly, the barn dance had to be cancelled because of lack of support.
Our fortnightly service for Primary School children and their families takes place next Thursday. The short 20-minute service starts at 4pm with doors open at 3.15pm for tea, toast, craft and games. All welcome.
Kidz Klub, who work with primary school aged children on Tuesday evenings from 5-6pm at Limbrick Wood Baptist Church, are looking for someone to operate their AV system. No prior knowledge necessary. It’s just a question of pressing buttons. Please speak to Greg or Emma Wildman if you can help.
Leaflets advertising our Easter programme are now available. Please note that the Passover Supper requires booking in advance by putting your name down on the sheet at the back of church on a first-come, first-served basis.
A church sponsored walk is being planned for the autumn. If you would like to be involved in the planning process, do come along to a meeting at the Vicarage on Wednesday at 7.30pm.
Access to Church Lane
You may be aware that roadworks are planned at the junction of Church Lane and Hockley Lane. It is worth allowing an extra 5 minutes for your travel time to church if you come by car or bus over the next 5 weeks. Forget me Not has been cancelled on March 26th and April 9th.
Thought for the Day
We are looking to post a ‘Thought for the Day’ on our Facebook page to encourage readers in or into faith. If you would like to contribute something occasionally, please speak to Carys or Greg.
Please note that the church’s AGM will take place on Monday April 8th at 7.30pm preceded by a communion service at 7pm. Do come along to hear about the church’s life over the last 12 months and give thanks for all that God has done. If anyone, would like to join the PCC, please speak to Greg, Phil or one of the churchwardens.
Lunch n Chat Mark 2
Lunch n Chat which has been running for over 10 years has been extremely successful in providing comfort and company to those newly bereaved. Because of the success of the group, we have launched a parallel group on Tuesday lunch times on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 12 noon. If you know anyone who is newly bereaved and might wish to come along, please put them in touch with us.
Cleaning Team Holiday Cover
We would be grateful for one to two people to join the loyal band of cleaners on an occasional basis as holiday cover. If you’re able to help, please speak to Jackie Lynch.
Please pray for Adrian Rawlings, Eddie Parkes, Bryan Walker, Colin Sanders, Joan Drake, Derek Shale, Flix Haynes, Norah Hall, Dennis Sinclair, Josie Yates, Ann & Peter Crowley, Stan Cooper, Beryl Lee and Rosemary Pottinger. To add names to the list please contact Julie at email@example.com or 07756 918847.
