Pews News – 5th May 2019

5th May 2019 – The Third Sunday of Easter

St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

We have our usual first Sunday pattern today of Holy Communion at 8am, Worship 4 All at 10am (theme: turning your life around) and Ignatian service of reflection at 6.30pm.

Children’s Church on 12-5-2019
As a number of our volunteers will be at the Parish Weekend on Sunday, 12th May, Children’s Church will not be meeting in the school hall on this day. There will, however, be the usual craft box available in the side room which parents are welcome to use with their children during the service. We look forward to seeing you all again on 19th May.

Plant Sale
Thanks to all those who supported our annual plant sale last week. Over £100 was raised towards church funds. Thanks also to David Griffiths and Gill Tunnicliffe for all their hard work in organising this.

Come and sing with Songs of Praise!
You are warmly invited to a special Songs of Praise music recording of hymns and songs at Warwick Road URC, Coventry this May. All are welcome and we are especially keen for enthusiastic singers to join us and lead the viewers at home in the singing. If interested, please see the poster at the back of church.

Stan Cooper
Many thanks for the support given to myself and family at Stan’s funeral and the many cards and sympathy I received following his death. It was a great comfort to me and I really felt the warmth and friendship from you all. Although a sad occasion it was an opportunity to celebrate, with St Andrew’s loving family, his long life and 60 years of marriage. Beryl Cooper.

Beetle Drive
St Andrews and St Andy’s are holding a Beetle Drive on Saturday, 1st June from 6-8pm in the Village Hall. Tickets are £4 for Adults and £2 for Children (under 4’s are free) which will include refreshments in the interval. Please do come along and support us as it is great fun for all the family. Tickets are now available from Gill Tunnicliffe at St Andrew’s and Anne Packwood at St Andy’s.

Rock Solid – calling all young people aged 10 – 14 years old!!
St Andrew’s and St Andy’s are starting a new and exciting youth group. It will be an evening of fun games, discussion and meeting new friends. The group will hold its first meeting this evening, 5th May, in the Scout Hut, Kenthurst Close, Eastern Green. We will meet between 6.30-8pm. The meetings will be every fortnight on a Sunday. We recognise it can be a bit scary going to something new, so why not bring a friend along. If you aren’t able too don’t worry, you will be able to make plenty of others. If you are planning to come along or you have any questions please phone text Nick on 07951 925772.

Kidz Klub Camp
In May half term, Kidz Klub are taking around ten children from Tile Hill and Canley Kidz Klubs on a camp to Viney Hill Christian Adventure Centre for two days. Many of the families can’t afford to pay the full cost of this but we don’t want that to exclude children from coming. The approximate cost per child is £75 (including accommodation, food, transport and activities). We are asking families to contribute a minimum of £10, which leaves us with £650 to raise. If you feel you are able to make a donation towards this trip please contact Sarah Adamson, Kidz Klub Coventry on 07890 868390.

Altar Setting Up
We have a small, dedicated band of altar servers, which needs additional people. Setting up the altar is fairly straightforward, and full training will be given. Volunteers will be asked to arrive at church for 9.30am. Please speak to Rita if you would like to know more.

We are looking for an additional volunteer who would be willing on an occasional basis to operate the powerpoint for the screens on Sunday morning. The volunteer would be expected to help once every couple of months or so.

It was reported at last week’s AGM of St Oswald’s Church that this last year has seen the highest ever take up of foodbank parcels. Most Wednesdays, the bank runs out of essential items by the time they close. St Oswald’s members wished to convey their appreciation of all that St Andrew’s does to support Foodbank. Please continue or even start bringing essential food items to church and placing them in the blue box at the back of church.

Kitchen Upgrade
Thanks to two generous grants from WREN (Waste Recycling Environment Ltd) and National Grid, and the additional extremely generous support from many members of the congregation, we are able to proceed with a much-needed refurbishment of our kitchen and side room. Many thanks to those who have been so generous. Any promised gifts should be placed into an envelope marked ‘kitchen’ and given to Greg or Jackie. If you are able to gift aid, this will add 25% to your gift at no extra cost. You can also do this by bank transfer, but please let us know if you do so. Work is likely to begin on the refurbishment mid-June.

Many thanks to Fay Gibbs for the Easter flowers

Sponsored Walk
There will be a sponsored ride and stride event on Saturday Sept 14th, starting at St Andrew’s and taking in 12-15 churches in the Diocese on the way to the most southern part of the diocese down in Shipston. Anyone is welcome to join us, either by walking or cycling or by becoming part of the wonderful support crew. You may walk the whole distance (approx. 40 miles) or just one leg from one church to another. Please see Greg or Veronika for further details.

Party in the Park
Do join us for Party in the Park tomorrow, Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May from 1-5pm. There is a wide variety of live entertainment including a Ukelele Orchestra, Dance School, All Star Theatre Company, Catch the Arrow and Soulful Gospel band. There are also lots of stalls, rides and food outlets in our biggest event yet. We are looking for volunteers to help with stalls/rides.  Please speak to Greg or Julie if able to help for an hour or two. We are also looking for people to come along at 9.30am and help with set up. Finally, we need cake! All offerings gratefully accepted, either home-made or shop bought. These can be brought on the day to Juniper Park or dropped off next Sunday at church or at the Vicarage.

Kidz Praise
Out next Kidz Praise service for Primary School children and their families takes place on Thursday 2nd May. Tea and toast will be served from 3.15pm, when there will be craft and other activities. The service will begin by 4pm when our story is ‘The Men who liked to say no’.

Christian Aid Week
Christian Aid week starts on Sunday May 12th.  We are looking for new volunteers to collect in the parish, as short or as long a round as you are able. Please contact Pat Sullivan at or speak to Greg.

Thought for the Day
We are looking to post a ‘Thought for the Day’ on our Facebook page to encourage readers in or into faith. If you would like to contribute something occasionally, please speak to Carys or Greg.

Mission Partners
Our latest newsletter from Dan & Phillipa Munday, our Mission Partners, is at the back of church (in the red folder).

Ann Crowley
Ann would like to convey her grateful thanks to all those who have supported her through her health challenges with their prayers and expressions of support and care. Thankfully, her health is now much improved.

Prayer List
Please pray for Eddie Parkes, Colin Sanders, Derek Shale, Flix Haynes, Norah Hall, Dennis Sinclair, Josie Yates, Beryl Lee and Rosemary Pottinger. To add names to the list please contact Julie at or 07756 918847.
