Pews News – 12th May 2019

12th May 2019 – The Fourth Sunday of Easter

St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Special Welcome
To Revd David Howard, a retired minister (former Vicar of St Bartholomew’s, Binley) who is leading our service this morning, while many of us are at the Parish Weekend.

Plant Sale
Thanks to all those who supported our annual plant sale. Over £100 was raised towards church funds. Thanks also to David Griffiths and Gill Tunnicliffe for all their hard work in organising this.

Altar setting up
We have a small, dedicated band of altar servers, which needs additional people. Setting up the altar is fairly straightforward, and full training will be given. Volunteers will be asked to arrive at church for 9.30am. Please speak to Rita if you would like to know more.

Beetle Drive
St Andrews and St Andy’s are holding a Beetle Drive on Saturday, 1st June from 6-8pm in the Village Hall. Tickets are £4 for Adults and £2 for Children (under 4’s are free) which will include refreshments in the interval. Please do come along and support us as it is great fun for all the family. Tickets are now available from Gill Tunnicliffe at St Andrew’s and Anne Packwood at St Andy’s.

We are looking for an additional volunteer who would be willing on an occasional basis to operate the PowerPoint for the screens on Sunday morning. The volunteer would be expected to help once every couple of months or so.

Walk to Church Sunday
Please note next Sunday, May 19th, is Walk to Church Sunday, when we encourage our congregations (as many as physically can) to walk (or cycle) to church. It’s good for our bodies, good for our planet and good for our souls (not to mention the parking!).

Rock Solid – calling all young people aged 10 – 14 years old!!
St Andrew’s and St Andy’s have started a new and exciting youth group. It is an evening of fun games, discussion and meeting new friends. The group meets on Sunday’s from 6-30-8pm in the Scout Hut, Kenthurst Close, Eastern Green. The meetings will be every fortnight on a Sunday, the next one being 19th May. We recognise it can be a bit scary going to something new, so why not bring a friend along. If you aren’t able too don’t worry, you will be able to make plenty of others. If you are planning to come along or you have any questions please phone text Nick on 07951 925772.

Kidz Klub Camp
In May half term, Kidz Klub are taking around ten children from Tile Hill and Canley Kidz Klubs on a camp to Viney Hill Christian Adventure Centre for two days. Many of the families can’t afford to pay the full cost of this but we don’t want that to exclude children from coming. The approximate cost per child is £75 (including accommodation, food, transport and activities). We are asking families to contribute a minimum of £10, which leaves us with £650 to raise. If you feel you are able to make a donation towards this trip please contact Sarah Adamson, Kidz Klub Coventry on 07890 868390.

It was reported at last week’s AGM of St Oswald’s Church that this last year has seen the highest ever take up of foodbank parcels. Most Wednesdays, the bank runs out of essential items by the time they close. St Oswald’s members wished to convey their appreciation of all that St Andrew’s does to support Foodbank. Please continue or even start bringing essential food items to church and placing them in the blue box at the back of church.

City Praise
There is the biannual gathering of all churches in the city to worship and pray together next Sunday at the Welcome Centre at Parkside at 6.30pm. If you want to experience hundreds of Christians worshipping together in one place and see the power of that many people praying together, do come along.

Kitchen Upgrade
Thanks to two generous grants from WREN (Waste Recycling Environment Ltd) and National Grid, and the additional extremely generous support from many members of the congregation, we are able to proceed with a much-needed refurbishment of our kitchen and side room. Many thanks to those who have been so generous. Work is likely to begin on the refurbishment mid-June.

Sponsored Walk
There will be a sponsored ride and stride event on Saturday Sept 14th, starting at St Andrew’s and taking in 12-15 churches in the Diocese on the way to the most southern part of the diocese down in Shipston. Anyone is welcome to join us, either by walking or cycling or by becoming part of the wonderful support crew. You may walk the whole distance (approx. 40 miles) or just one leg from one church to another. Please see Greg or Veronika for further details.

Andrew Rennie
Sadly, Andrew’s health has deteriorated and he is being forced to move flat over the next couple of months. Because of his disability and health problems, this will be a challenge for him. Hence, he has asked whether there might be a couple of people who would be prepared to help him declutter in advance of this by packing stuff away and possibly taking items away for him. If you think you might be able to help, please contact Greg or Phil.

Party in the Park
Huge thanks to all those who supported Party in the Park last Monday. Something like 2,500 attended, making it the most successful so far. Particular thanks to those who volunteered on the day. You are real heroes, every one of you! The event costs £4,500 to put on, but we think because of the turnout we may have still made a very small profit. Church members won two raffle prizes (yellow tickets 411-415 & 416-420).

Kidz Praise
Out next Kidz Praise service for Primary School children and their families takes place on Thursday 16th May. Tea and toast will be served from 3.15pm, when there will be craft and other activities. The service will begin by 4pm when our story is Daniel in the Lion’s Den.

Serving those in Need
In June there will be a sermon series on Serving those in Need. To accompany the series there will be a mid-week session where we will explore the theme from that week’s sermon and look at how we as individuals, and as a church, can be people who serve those in need. The mid-week group will meet in church from 8-9.30pm and refreshments will be available from 7.30pm. The mid-week sessions are on the following dates and everyone is welcome to all or some of them:

Tuesday 18th JuneMaterial need

Bishop’s Certificate in Discipleship & Mission (BCDM)
The Diocese offers a range of short courses to help us as disciples of God to deepen our faith and our understanding of the Bible.
