Pews News – 22nd September 2019

22nd September 2019 – The Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity

St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Prayer Available
Please note that there is always someone willing to pray with you after the service about any need or concern you have. Please feel free to approach one of the prayer team direct or ask one of the clergy.

Autumn Fayre – Saturday 12th October
It is only 3 weeks away, so we need to start requesting help on the day for setting up and managing stalls. We need bric a brac, books, toys unwanted gifts, bottles and chocolate for tombola, cakes, raffle prizes etc. If anyone wants a table to sell their own crafts, let me know. Most of all we need your support, so please bring friends and family along on the day. Jackie Lynch.

Harvest Flowers
We will be celebrating Harvest the first two Sundays of October. If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of the flowers please see Ann Dove. Volunteers will be needed to help decorate the church. If you can spare half an hour on Saturday 5th October at 9.15am please let Ann Dove know.

Healing Service
There will be a special service next Sunday with the opportunity for anointing with oil and prayer for healing in the context of our regular communion service. All welcome.

Steve and Eileen Warne
Have left Eastern. There will be an opportunity to say farewell to them at a special service on Sunday 29th September at 4.30pm followed by refreshments. Today is the final chance for anyone who wishes to contribute to a leaving gift. Donations to Rita or Lesley.

Stories needed!
Do you have a story or tribute for Stephen and Eileen at their farewell service on 29th September (4.30pm at St Andrews)? We need people to tell stories of how the Warnes have blessed them or how God has used them in your life. Funny anecdotes also welcome! Contact if you are able to help.

Quiz Night
Thanks to all who supported the Quiz Night on Friday. At the time of writing, we were expecting 80 guests.

Allesley Green Prayer Group

A small group meet to pray for the Allesley Green community on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm. All welcome.

Book Club
Our next book club meeting is on Saturday 16th November from 9.30-11am in the vicarage. Everyone is welcome to come along. The book we are reading is: Searching for Sunday by Rachel Held Evans and this is an opportunity to discuss the book and gain insight from others. In the book ‘the author embarks on a quest to find out what it really means to be part of the Church. Centred around seven sacraments, Evans quest takes readers through a liturgical year with stories about baptism, communion, confirmation, confession, marriage, vocation, and death that are funny, heart-breaking, and sharply honest. A memoir about making do and taking risks, about the messiness of community and the power of grace, Searching for Sunday is about overcoming cynicism to find hope.’ Each person will need a copy of the book (or access an audio version of the book) and need to have read it, or some of it before we meet. If you are interested please speak with Greg or Sue Masters.

Shawl Ministry
After many years of loyal service, Jackie Page has decided to lay down responsibility for coordinating our Shawl Ministry. We would like to find a replacement as soon as possible. If you would like to know more about what this entails, please speak to Jackie or Lynnette. The person who takes this on doesn’t necessarily have to be a knitter themselves.

Nativity 2019
Plans are afoot for a live Nativity at Christmas. Anyone who would like to help as part of the planning team should speak to Greg.

We are looking for an additional volunteer who would be willing on an occasional basis to operate the PowerPoint for the screens on Sunday morning. The volunteer would be expected to help once every couple of months or so.

Drama Club
A new term has just begun on Tuesdays from 6-7pm at Our Lady of the Assumption on Tile Hill Lane. Cost £1 with all 8-12 year olds welcome. Drama, games and food. To find out more, please speak to Greg or Selina.

Many thanks to Jose England who wonderfully officiated at the grand official opening of our new kitchen earlier this month. Thanks also to those who turned out in support.

Gift Appeal
Congregation members and other supporters of the church are invited to respond to our appeal, in which we are seeking to raise £3,000 in gifts and pledges. The appeal is designed to support the work of St Andrew’s generally, but also three projects in particular: our new Youth Worker, Taste Life (support for those suffering with eating disorders) and St Andy’s need for a new, permanent venue. Please give generously either one-off gifts. Gifts should be placed in an envelope and marked clearly.

Sponsored Walk
The sponsored 35 mile walk ‘From Bubbenhall to Bidford’, following the Shakespeare Avon Way was successfully completed last Saturday.  If you were kind enough to sponsor us, please place your sponsorship offering in the basket at the back of church and cross your name off the list. If you didn’t get round to offering sponsorship, it’s not too late! Just put your money in the basket or go online and donate through our Just Giving page  We are raising money for Kidz Klub and St Andrew’s. Kidz Klub will use the money to take Tile Hill children on outings.

Open the Book
A team of 10 of us deliver assemblies into two primary schools in the area, entertaining children while telling bible stories. We would especially like to supplement the Wednesday morning team who take assemblies at St Andrew’s. You would need to be available from 8.30-9.30am. You wouldn’t need to be available every Wednesday. Even once a month would make a big difference. To find out more, please speak to Hilary, Kate or Greg.

Tots Praise
The next Tots Praise service will take place on 24th September. This is an informal gathering for pre-school children and their carers, with songs, craft and stories. Doors open at 8.45am, with the service starting at 9.15am.

Transport for Medical Appointments
St Andrew’s is planning to launch a new service in the autumn, offering lifts to medical appointments at Coventry doctors and hospital. In order to do this, we need volunteer drivers who would be willing to help out on an occasional basis with a lift to the hospital or doctors. Full training and briefing will be provided. A first meeting for anyone interested will take place on Wednesday 25th September at 7pm in church. Any expression of interest will not be taken as a firm commitment at this stage. You can limit your commitment in any way you see fit. All volunteers will be subject to a DBS check for safeguarding purposes. If you would like to know more, please contact Julie 07756 918847 or

Empowered – a conference to support and inspire those working with children
