Pews News – 13th October 2019

13th October 2019 – The Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith.  If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.

Welcome to our Harvest Festival celebration with Holy Communion. All harvest contributions will be passed on to the Foodbank in Tile Hill. We are encouraging people to consider the carbon footprint of the food on their plates. How far has your food travelled before it arrives in your fridge or cupboards? Do you remember when you knew where everything you ate came from (local fields and local farms)? Why not look on the tins in your cupboards and see how much it’s changed? Look out for our leaflet advertising local producers.

Harvest Thanks
To all the church decorators who have made the church look so beautiful for Harvest. To Denise Davies for baking our harvest loaf.

Norah Hall
We regret to announce the death of Norah Hall last Sunday morning. Norah was a much valued member of both Sunday and Wednesday congregation. Her funeral will take place at St Andrew’s on Friday October 18th at 10.15am, followed by committal at Canley at 11.15am. Please pray for Liz & Chris and the rest of Norah’s family at this sad time.

Prayer Available
Please note that there is always someone willing to pray with you after the service about any need or concern you have. Please feel free to approach one of the prayer team direct or ask one of the clergy.

Many thanks to Rosemarie Over for organising the Queen Tribute Act who performed at the Massey Ferguson Social Club last Saturday. Over £600 was raised for church funds and a brilliant time was had by all.

Shawl Ministry
You will have received a job description this morning, describing the work of the Shawl Ministry Coordinator. After many years of loyal service, Jackie Page has decided to lay down responsibility for coordinating our Shawl Ministry. We would like to find a replacement as soon as possible. If you would like to know more about what this entails, please speak to Jackie or Lynnette. The person who takes this on doesn’t necessarily have to be a knitter themselves. Please pray carefully about this.

Seek His Face
Do join us for Seek His Face tonight at 6.30pm. We meet for an hour to sing, pray and listen to God. All welcome.

Autumn Fayre
Many thanks to those who supported our annual Autumn Fayre yesterday at the Village Hall. Thanks to all those who staffed stalls or helped with set up. Extra special thanks to Jackie Lynch, who worked so hard to organise it.

Children’s Society
I have come to a decision, that after next February, I will no longer be collecting the Society boxes. I will have done it for 22 years and feel I have served them well. I would like to think that someone will come forward to carry it on. It is collected once a year over about a month, counted and banked. If you feel you could do this and would like any further information, please let me know. Thank you everyone who has supported this worthy cause over the years, and you can still do this independently. Jackie Lynch.

Light Party
The Children’s Team are once again holding a Light Party in church on Thursday, 31st October, 5-6.30pm. This is an alternative event to Halloween for primary aged children. We will be celebrating goodness and light in our world through crafts, games and stories. A pizza and finger food tea will be provided. To help us with our catering and to enable us to comply with our safeguarding policy, a registration form must be completed for each child. Forms and letters giving further details are available today at the back of church. Please return completed forms to Shirley or Becky. It would be helpful if children could bring a torch with them. There is no charge for this event.

Tea with Santa
Santa is once again coming to tea at St Andrew’s! He will be visiting us during the afternoon of Saturday, 30th November at the Village Hall. This event is for all ages – the young and the ‘young at heart’. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be on sale very soon. This event proved to be very popular last year and as numbers are strictly limited, please get your tickets early.

Youth Choir Workshops
We are excited to be running Youth Choir Workshops for 9-14 year olds on the 21st and 22nd October from 10.30am-12.30pm at St Andrew’s Church. These will be filled with lots of fun and an opportunity to sing some great songs led by Carys Egner and students from Nexus ICA – who have been studying and qualified in Popular Music. These will be free with opportunity to donate if you so wish. There will be a short performance at 12.15pm on Tuesday 22nd October for parents. Please email for a registration form.

Book Club
Our next book club meeting is on Saturday 16th November from 9.30-11am in the vicarage. Everyone is welcome to come along. The book we are reading is: Searching for Sunday by Rachel Held Evans and this is an opportunity to discuss the book and gain insight from others. In the book ‘the author embarks on a quest to find out what it really means to be part of the Church. Centred around seven sacraments, Evans quest takes readers through a liturgical year with stories about baptism, communion, confirmation, confession, marriage, vocation, and death that are funny, heart-breaking, and sharply honest. A memoir about making do and taking risks, about the messiness of community and the power of grace, Searching for Sunday is about overcoming cynicism to find hope.’ Each person will need a copy of the book (or access an audio version of the book) and need to have read it, or some of it before we meet. If you are interested please speak with Greg or Sue Masters.

Request for Christmas hampers to bless families of Kidz Klub Coventry children
Following the success of delivering Christmas hampers to Kidz Klub families in recent years, we are looking to do the same again this year. The hampers have been an incredible blessing to many of our families, reducing several parents to tears at the kindness expressed in the gift. In 2018 we gave away over 20 hampers to families around Coventry and it was an incredible privilege to do so; but we couldn’t do it without your help. Please could you consider if your church could put together some hampers to bless our families. More details of what could and should not go in the hamper can be found in the information sheet on the noticeboard at the back of church, along with packaging instructions. We are looking for a volunteer at St Andrew’s to coordinate this for us. Please speak to Greg if you are interested.

Nativity 2019
Plans are afoot for a live Nativity at Christmas. We are still looking for a wise man! Anyone who would like to help by performing or by being part of the backstage crew, please speak to Greg

Kidz Praise
Our next Kidz Praise Service, for Primary School aged children and their families takes place next Thursday, Oct 17th, with doors opening at 3.15pm for craft, refreshments and games, with the service of song, story and prayer starting at 4pm.

We are looking for an additional volunteer who would be willing on an occasional basis to operate the PowerPoint for the screens on Sunday morning. The volunteer would be expected to help once every couple of months or so.

Side Room
Would all users of the side room ensure that tables and chairs are only moved by lifting them from the floor. Dragging them is causing the new floor to be scratched.

Gift Appeal
Congregation members and other supporters of the church are invited to respond to our appeal, in which we are seeking to raise £3,000 in gifts and pledges. The appeal is designed to support the work of St Andrew’s generally, but also three projects in particular: our new Youth Worker, Taste Life (support for those suffering with eating disorders) and St Andy’s need for a new, permanent venue. Please give generously either one-off gifts. Gifts should be placed in an envelope and marked clearly.

Please note that Greg will be on holiday from Mon October 21st to Thurs October 24th inclusive. The church office will also be closed during this period. In case of an emergency, please contact a churchwarden.

Memorial Service
Our annual Memorial Service takes place on Sunday November 3rd at 6.30pm. Any names to be read out should be given to Julie at 07756 918847 or

Games Night
A fun Games Night has been organised on Friday October 26th at the Jaguar Club. There will be a skittles alley, bar skittles, picture quiz and many other fun things to do. Tickets are available from Greg/Rita at a cost of £8 each. Bring a team or come along and join in with others. Bar snacks available.

Sponsored Walk
The sponsored 35 mile walk ‘From Bubbenhall to Bidford’, following the Shakespeare Avon Way was successfully completed on September 14th. If you were kind enough to sponsor us, please place your sponsorship offering in the basket at the back of church and cross your name off the list. If you didn’t get round to offering sponsorship, it’s not too late! Just put your money in the basket or go online and donate through our Just Giving page We are raising money for Kidz Klub and St Andrews. Kidz Klub will use the money to take Tile Hill children on outings.

Transport for Medical Appointments
St Andrew’s is planning to launch a new service on November 1st, offering lifts to medical appointments at Coventry doctors and hospital. In order to do this, we need volunteer drivers who would be willing to help out on an occasional basis with a lift to the hospital or doctors. Full training and briefing will be provided. Any expression of interest will not be taken as a firm commitment at this stage. You can limit your commitment in any way you see fit. All volunteers will be subject to a DBS check for safeguarding purposes. If you would like to know more, please speak to Greg or contact Julie 07756 918847 or
