20th October 2019 – The Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
As it is the half term holiday next week, Children’s Church will not be meeting in the school on 20th and 27th October. A box of craft activities will be available in the side room for children to use under the supervision of parents. Children’s Church will open for the second half of the term on 10th November and we look forward to welcoming children back then.
To all the church decorators who have made the church look so beautiful for Harvest. To Denise Davies for baking our harvest loaf. And thanks to all those who brought food gifts, which will be taken to Tile Hill Foodbank. Please remember to consider your food miles and shop for local produce where you can.
I have come to a decision, that after next February, I will no longer be collecting the Society boxes. I will have done it for 22 years and feel I have served them well. I would like to think that someone will come forward to carry it on. It is collected once a year over about a month, counted and banked. If you feel you could do this and would like any further information, please let me know. Thank you everyone who has supported this worthy cause over the years, and you can still do this independently. Jackie Lynch
“Our Nation is in crisis and our world is troubled. “PRAYING TOGETHER” – an opportunity to hold our community, our troubled nation and specific areas of the world in prayer will be held tonight at 6.30pm. All are welcome to join us. See members of the Prayer Ministry Team for further details.”
The Children’s Team are once again holding a Light Party in church on Thursday, 31st October, 5-6.30pm. This is an alternative event to Halloween for primary aged children. We will be celebrating goodness and light in our world through crafts, games and stories. A pizza and finger food tea will be provided. To help us with our catering and to enable us to comply with our safeguarding policy, a registration form must be completed for each child. Forms and letters giving further details are available today at the back of church. Please return completed forms to Shirley or Becky. It would be helpful if children could bring a torch with them. There is no charge for this event.
Please note that there is always someone willing to pray with you after the service about any need or concern you have. Please feel free to approach one of the prayer team direct or ask one of the clergy.
Many thanks to Rosemarie Over for organising the Queen Tribute Act who performed at the Massey Ferguson Social Club on 5th October. Over £600 was raised for church funds and a brilliant time was had by all.
Thanks to Julia McNaney, who has kindly agreed to take on the role of Shawl Ministry coordinator from Jackie Page. All our thanks to Jackie who has been doing this role for many years.
Many thanks to those who supported our annual Autumn Fayre last Saturday at the Village Hall. Thanks to all those who staffed stalls or helped with set up. Extra special thanks to Jackie Lynch, who worked so hard to organise it. Over £600 was raised towards church funds.
Tea with Santa
Santa is once again coming to tea at St Andrew’s on 30th November in the Village Hall from 3.15-5.00pm. This event is for the whole family – children, parents and grandparents. Children must be accompanied by an adult, but you don’t have to come with a child to join in the fun! Tickets will be on sale from 3rd November until 24th November at a cost of £5.00 per person (adult and child). Any tickets bought after 24th November will be £6.00 per person. Numbers are strictly limited so please buy your tickets early. If you would like to register your interest now, please text Hilary on 07980 596646 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, stating your name, number of tickets required and a contact number. Thank you.
Children’s Hamper Request
We will be holding a raffle at Tea with Santa and are requesting items for a Children’s Hamper. The Children’s Team would be grateful if you could help us by donating suitable small items (packet of crayons/felt tip pens, colouring book, sweets, Christmas chocolate, Christmas stickers, skipping rope, paper chains, small craft set, small toy, Playdo, etc etc….) A box will be put at the back of church for any donations. Any spare ends of ribbon which can be used for a craft activity will also be gratefully received as will offers of cupcakes for the tea and help on the day. Very many thanks in advance from the Children’s Team.
Youth Choir Workshops
We are excited to be running Youth Choir Workshops for 9-14 year olds on the 21st and 22nd October from 10.30am-12.30pm at St Andrew’s Church. These will be filled with lots of fun and an opportunity to sing some great songs led by Carys Egner and students from Nexus ICA – who have been studying and qualified in Popular Music. These will be free with opportunity to donate if you so wish. There will be a short performance at 12.15pm on Tuesday 22nd October for parents. Please email email@example.com for a registration form.
Plans are afoot for a live Nativity at Christmas. We are still looking for a wise man! Anyone who would like to help by performing or by being part of the backstage crew, please speak to Greg.
We are looking for an additional volunteer who would be willing on an occasional basis to operate the PowerPoint for the screens on Sunday morning. The volunteer would be expected to help once every couple of months or so.
Would all users of the side room ensure that tables and chairs are only moved by lifting them from the floor. Dragging them is causing the new floor to be scratched.
Our next Tots Praise service for pre-school children and their families takes place on Tuesday 22nd October at 9.15am. Craft, song and story for the whole family. All welcome.
Congregation members and other supporters of the church are invited to respond to our appeal, in which we are seeking to raise £3,000 in gifts and pledges. The appeal is designed to support the work of St Andrew’s generally, but also three projects in particular: our new Youth Worker, Taste Life (support for those suffering with eating disorders) and St Andy’s need for a new, permanent venue. Please give generously either one-off gifts. Gifts should be placed in an envelope and marked clearly.
Holiday and Pews News
Please note that Greg will be on holiday from Mon Oct 21st to Fri Oct 25th inclusive. The church office will also be closed during this period. In case of an emergency, please contact a churchwarden. Please note that there will be no Pews News next week.
Our drama club for 8-12 year olds starts up again after its half-term break on Tuesday 29th October at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church on Tile Hill Lane from 6-7pm. All welcome. To find out, more speak to Greg or Carys.
Our annual Memorial Service takes place on Sunday 3rd November at 6.30pm. Any names to be read out should be given to Julie at 07756 918847 or firstname.lastname@example.org
The Games Night scheduled for October 25th has been cancelled due to lack of ticket sales.
The sponsored 35 mile walk ‘From Bubbenhall to Bidford’, following the Shakespeare Avon Way was successfully completed on September 14th. If you were kind enough to sponsor us, please place your sponsorship offering in the basket at the back of church and cross your name off the list. If you didn’t get round to offering sponsorship, it’s not too late! Just put your money in the basket or go online and donate through our Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/greg-smith-2. We are raising money for Kidz Klub and St Andrew’s. Kidz Klub will use the money to take Tile Hill children on outings.

Transport for Medical Appointments
St Andrew’s is planning to launch a new service on November 1st, offering lifts to medical appointments at Coventry doctors and hospital. In order to do this, we need volunteer drivers who would be willing to help out on an occasional basis with a lift to the hospital or doctors. Full training and briefing will be provided. Any expression of interest will not be taken as a firm commitment at this stage. You can limit your commitment in any way you see fit. All volunteers will be subject to a DBS check for safeguarding purposes. If you would like to know more, please speak to Greg or contact Julie 07756 918847 or email@example.com
Our next book club meeting is on Saturday 16th November from 9.30-11am in the vicarage. Everyone is welcome to come along. The book we are reading is: Searching for Sunday by Rachel Held Evans and this is an opportunity to discuss the book and gain insight from others. In the book ‘the author embarks on a quest to find out what it really means to be part of the Church. Centred around seven sacraments, Evans quest takes readers through a liturgical year with stories about baptism, communion, confirmation, confession, marriage, vocation, and death that are funny, heart-breaking, and sharply honest. A memoir about making do and taking risks, about the messiness of community and the power of grace, Searching for Sunday is about overcoming cynicism to find hope.’ Each person will need a copy of the book (or access an audio version of the book) and need to have read it, or some of it before we meet. If you are interested please speak with Greg or Sue Masters.
Request for Christmas hampers to bless families of Kidz Klub Coventry children
Following the success of delivering Christmas hampers to Kidz Klub families in recent years, we are looking to do the same again this year. The hampers have been an incredible blessing to many of our families, reducing several parents to tears at the kindness expressed in the gift. In 2018 we gave away over 20 hampers to families around Coventry and it was an incredible privilege to do so; but we couldn’t do it without your help. Please could you consider if your church could put together some hampers to bless our families. More details of what could and should not go in the hamper can be found in the information sheet on the noticeboard at the back of church, along with packaging instructions. We are looking for a volunteer at St Andrew’s to coordinate this for us. Please speak to Greg if you are interested.
This week’s altar flowers were kindly donated by Rosemarie Over.
Please pray for Ollie Blundred, Maureen Regan, Colin Sanders, Flix Haynes, Dennis Sinclair, Josie Yates, baby Austin, Beryl Lee and Rosemary Pottinger. To add names to the list please contact Julie at firstname.lastname@example.org or 07756 918847.
