1st December 2019 – The First Sunday of Advent
St Andrew’s Church welcomes allcomers, whether this is your first time or thousandth time in church. You are welcome whatever your age, gender, marital status, disability, race or sexuality. You are welcome whether you have a deep and mature faith in Christ; are uncertain and still seeking; or have no faith. If you are new to church, please do take a welcome leaflet to be found in the pews; and do not hesitate to ask one of the welcomers if you have any queries.
Please note that there is always someone willing to pray with you after the service about any need or concern you have. Please feel free to approach one of the prayer team direct or ask one of the clergy.
Gill Tunnicliffe and Ann Crowley
We are sad to announce the deaths of both Gill Tunnicliffe and Ann Crowley this week. Gill’s funeral will take place at St Andrew’s tomorrow Monday 2nd December at 10.30am. Ann’s funeral will take place the following Monday at 1.30pm. They will both be much missed. Please keep their families in your prayers.
Safeguarding in Coventry Diocese
Over the next few months, the Diocese will be conducting a Past Cases Review. An independent reviewer will be looking at safeguarding files relating to church officers, to ensure all safeguarding matters have been reported and appropriate action taken. All parish records are being checked for either past or present concerns. Any instances of abuse will be examined and bought to light. For further information on this, please see leaflet on the noticeboard at the back of church.
Darkness to Light
We begin Advent with a candlelit service of praise: Darkness to Light this evening at 6.30pm. All welcome to this very powerful start to the Advent season.
Seek His Face
Our monthly gathering for prayer, prophecy and praise takes place next Sunday at 6.30pm. All are welcome to join us.

St Andy’s Church will be holding our annual Lantern Walk on Sunday 8th December, this is a great community event with a focus on the true meaning of Christmas. Come to the Penny Farthing from 4-6pm to decorate a lantern, we will be also having donkey rides for the children. We will then proceed to Bannerbrook Park with our lanterns to sing a selection of carols together. We hope to see you there!
Our next book club meeting is on Thursday 23rd January 2020, 7.30-9pm, at 55 Handsworth Crescent and everyone is welcome to come along. The book we are reading is: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce a novel centred on a man who goes to post a letter and ends up walking 600 miles. The group is an opportunity to discuss the book and gain insight from others. Each person will need a copy of the book (or access an audio version of the book) and need to have read some of it before we meet. If you are interested please speak with Greg or Sue Masters.
Save the Date – Parish weekend 15th to 17th May 2020
With Christmas not far away, I want to encourage you to think about next Spring and the St Andrew’s Parish Weekend. Following two successful weekends we are doing it again in 2020 and would love you to join us. What is it? A weekend away for members of St Andrew’s/St Andy’s to come together for bible teaching, worship, prayer and fellowship. Where is it? Shallowford house, Staffordshire (about an hour’s drive from Coventry. Who is it for? Everyone including children. Interested? Want to know more? Speak with Sue Masters or Greg. We are happy to take deposits or to start a saving plan if that helps. Please speak with Sue about this. (07958322026, firstname.lastname@example.org).
Church Cleaning Opportunity
We have a very willing band of people who clean the church each week, but we are in need of more help please to share the burden. They clean the church on a Friday. The more volunteers we have the easier and quicker it is to clean. It would also mean we can set up two teams, so people aren’t required every week. The cleaning takes a couple of hours and is an important form of ministry. Many of our visitors comment on how lovely and clean the church looks when they visit and this doesn’t happen by chance, but by the efforts of those who clean. If you can help please speak to Jackie Lynch or one of the Churchwardens.
We are looking for an additional volunteer who would be willing on an occasional basis to operate the PowerPoint for the screens on Sunday morning. The volunteer would be expected to help once every couple of months or so.
Our next Kidz Praise service for primary school aged children takes place on Thursday 5th December. Doors are open from 3.15pm for tea, toast, craft activities and games. The short service of story, song and prayer then begins at 4pm. Arrival time is fluid. Do join us as this week we think about Advent.
Our fortnightly service for pre-school children (Tots Praise) next takes place on Tuesday 10th December at 9.15am. Doors are open from 8.45am after school children have been dropped off. The service lasts approx. 30 minutes.
Would all users of the side room ensure that tables and chairs are only moved by lifting them from the floor. Dragging them is causing the new floor to be scratched.
Our annual Toy Service takes place this morning. We will be pleased to still receive new, unwrapped toys to place under the tree for the remainder of this week. These will be distributed via Coventry City Mission to children in the city who might otherwise be without this Christmas.
Our drama club for 8-12 year olds finishes for the term on Tuesday. We meet at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church on Tile Hill Lane from 6-7pm. All welcome. To find out, more speak to Greg or Carys. We start up again on January 14th.

Praying for Allesley Green
A group of us meet to pray for Allesley Green each month. We meet at 14 New Ash Drive on the estate. Anyone who wishes to is welcome to join us.
Many thanks to all those who sponsored our walkers in September. Just in excess of £1500 was raised for the church and Kidz Klub, Tile Hill who will use the money for supporting children in the Tile Hill area, many of whom experience significant disadvantages.
The Nightingales Christmas Carol Concert – Dec 7th (tickets cost £5 – available from Hayley Hedges)

Transport for Medical Appointments
St Andrew’s new service, offering lifts to medical appointments at Coventry doctors and hospital, will launch on Monday December 2nd. To book a lift, please contact Julie on 07756 918847 or email@example.com. It is important that as much notice as possible is given. We are enormously grateful to all our volunteer drivers who have freely offered their time. We still need more volunteers if you willing to offer a lift, perhaps once a fortnight.
Request for Christmas hampers to bless families of Kidz Klub Coventry children
Following the success of delivering Christmas hampers to Kidz Klub families in recent years, we are looking to do the same again this year. The hampers have been an incredible blessing to many of our families, reducing several parents to tears at the kindness expressed in the gift. In 2018 we gave away over 20 hampers to families around Coventry and it was an incredible privilege to do so; but we couldn’t do it without your help. Please could you consider if your church could put together some hampers to bless our families. More details of what could and should not go in the hamper can be found in the information sheet on the noticeboard at the back of church, along with packaging instructions. We are looking for a volunteer at St Andrew’s to coordinate this for us. Please speak to Greg if you are interested.
This week’s altar flowers were kindly donated by Ann Dove.
Please pray for Beryl Poppitt, Colin Sanders, Flix Haynes, Josie Yates, Beryl Lee and Rosemary Pottinger. To add names to the list please contact Julie at firstname.lastname@example.org or 07756 918847.
