Apologies for the late arrival of the bulletin today. I have just been taking my first funeral since lockdown, Naomi Lewis’s uncle. It was a very strange experience, just Naomi and I. Especially difficult is the ruling that one has to maintain a 2m distance from someone who is grieving. Despite it being unlike any other funeral I have ever taken, the declaration made at the start of the service, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 13.35) remains as true as ever. Spare a thought in your prayers for those who are experiencing the double agony of losing loved ones and unable to say goodbye to them properly.
It is true that the church bills have been reduced a little during the lockdown with money saved on gas, electricity and candles! However, most of our outgoings remain unaffected and our reliance on your generosity is as great as ever. One person has very kindly pushed a donation through my door, and I am grateful for this. However, rather than risk breaking physical isolation rules, might I suggest that you save up your donations (in a jar or equivalent) and bring them to church when we reconvene. It would be good to do this tangibly rather than just making a mental note. Of course, those who give by direct debit or standing order come into their own; and we are immensely grateful to continue to receive their gifts.
We would love to have more volunteer readers to take part in services. You will need a smart phone and an internet connection for this. Even if you are not very confident about this, we will happily hold your hands (metaphorically) and talk you through it.
Contacting the Vicar
You are welcome to contact Greg on his mobile number as well as the Vicarage line. The number is 07902 794653. Morning, noon or night, but remembering Friday is his day off. Any emergencies on a Friday should be directed to a churchwarden.
Requests for food shopping are slowly growing. We are here to help the whole parish and not just church members. If you need help with getting food, do get in touch with Julie by responding to this email or by phoning 07756 918847. Please give us a couple of days’ notice and don’t wait until you’ve completely run out of something before letting us know. This service is not just for the elderly, but for anyone who isn’t allowed to shop for themselves.
Thanks to Jeremy for producing this month’s Prayer Guide which is attached to this message. Please do pray!
Sermons on the phone
We are investigating the possibility of recording sermons and giving you a phone number to ring so that you can listen in at no charge. This is for people who can’t watch the services online. If you know anyone who would like to take advantage of this, please let us know.
This Sunday is Palm Sunday. Due to the ongoing circumstances it will not be possible to distribute Palm crosses. Can I encourage you this year to recycle your Palm cross from last year. However, if you don’t have one available or would prefer, how about making a cross and colouring it in.
As things are changing with the way we as a church reach out to people, you may want to write across the horizontal limb ‘CHANGING CHURCH and something appropriate down the vertical limb ie FAITHFUL GOD.
Please have your crosses with you for our Sunday service, to make it a special occasion
You could also take a selfie and post it on our Facebook page.
Our Easter Programme won’t be as full as previous years for obvious reasons. However, there will be plenty to help you as you complete the journey of Lent and beyond to the Resurrection.
